Total Format Review

15 years after blessing us with their presence first time round Samurai Shodown has made a grand re-entrance on the PSP as a retro compilation, containing 6 memorable fighting games from this great series. The clue though really is in the term retro, because while 15 years is quite a long while, memories of the first game paint it as a much better looking game than it appears now, like so many other retro games, the games in this series have not stood the test of time very well in the graphical department. But and it is a but of rather large proportions, the graphics were never the ingredient that made this series so enjoyable in the first place and they certainly don't spoil it now.

You would be forgiven for thinking that SNK are trying to cash in on all their old games by releasing them as compilations, but I say why the hell not when such great games can be released in such a great collection pack, at such a great price. There are plenty of other collections out there by other companies that come nowhere near the standard that this series has offered.

This set of games is exactly as the title of the game clearly states, this is a set of great fighting games with the theme being Samurai, for the older gamer, this will not just be a trip back to childhood, it will be a sharp reminder of how good, yet simple games from the not so distant past were and how much fun can be had, without the need for investing a month of Sundays into it.

Total Format Scoring Details For Samurai Shodown Anthology

Graphics

Slightly dated by todays standards, but they hold up extremely well on the PSP version of the games.

Sound

The sound quality for this collection is of a similar standard to the original releases, acceptable but nothing memorable, solid and practical, yet nothing that will blow your socks off.

Gameplay

There are some great unique elements to these games that make the games very enjoyable and even by todays standards, these games have plenty enough to keep you going and wanting more. These games are among the better fighters that were around back in the day and they are still enjoyable, especially for old school gamers.

Lastability

As I will keep on saying, with all fighters of this kind of quality, there will always be a few spare moemnts to load them up and kick some pixelated butt, they never get boring, providing the gameplay is good and this series has great game play, smooth movements and enjoyable fights, they will get a lot of play time.

Overall

A very enjoyable and memory enducing experience and well worth the money, each of the games offers something a little different. For older gamers who were into fighting games, this collection is serious must have and for first timers, I'd say give this retro experience a shot, you'll be really surprised at how much fun you can have with them.

Pros: good ol Samurai Showdown on a new system
Cons: a rush job with lack of options

Great game has all my favorite characters....can't stop the time limit on VS or Arcade....hence makes the Saturn version of Samurai 3 and 4 superior.
