Two-year-old boy found dead, by mother, after drinking methadone
A two-year-old boy died after drinking the liquid heroin substitute methadone, it has emerged.
Derek Doran was found dead in his bed by his 25-year-old mother at their home in Elphinstone, East Lothian.
Police have confirmed they are carrying out a probe into the full circumstances surrounding the death.
It happened last December but test results have only just been confirmed.
It is not yet clear how Derek got hold of the methadone, but police sources said his mother, Lisa Dodds, and his 22-year-old father, Derek Doran, use the drug.
Both have been questioned by detectives.
The toddler was taken to Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Lothian and Borders Police said they received the results of a toxicology report last week, which confirmed Derek had died on December 13 from a methadone overdose.
According to a report in the Sunday Mail, the little boy was buried at Tranent Cemetery on January 13.
The revelation comes just five weeks after it emerged that an 11-year-old girl was treated in hospital for the effects of heroin after she collapsed at school in Glasgow.
