Radeon 9600 Display Settings problem

When I go onto my display->Settings->Advanced->Overlay page where all the slider controls are for brightness, contrast, gamma etc. I can't alter them any more but I used to be able to

I had a really dark film a while ago so I put the brightness up to the highest setting but now all the stuff I have which uses overlay mode to display (e.g. DVDs etc) is too bright, and I can't change it. I have tried reinstalling the display adapter device and reinstalling all the ATI control panel software and drivers but its still all frozen and greyed out.

I had that, one day it was there, i installed the new ATi drivers and it was gone. Installed the new Catalyst software and drivers and it was back to normal

Its ok I discovered that the overlay controls only activate when you are actually playing something using overlay mode, so if you start playing a DVD (assuming the player is using overlay which it should normally be), and then open the Display control panel and go to the overlay page they will be active.
