pc keeps crashing

Hi my pc keeps crashing, at first i thought it was the lithium battery that is attached the motherboardm as the time and date were resetting to defalt upon turning my pc on each time.


But that is not the case as i just got the blue screen again, and the pc restarts.

Also when i turn my pc on for the first time i have to press f1 to continue because a bios check or something and defaults restored.

Could you get the stop screen data?

If your computer restarts automatically then right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> press Startup and Recovery settings button and clear Automatically restart. Then you have to just wait and write down the stop message and the hex number in it.

My main suspects are:

1) Faulty memory stick, you can try testmem86 (google) but if it's a temperature issue with mem stick that mem test won't reveal it.
2) Temperature issue with CPU or GPU, try dusting your puter's inside may help or may not.
3) Driver issue with non up-to-date drivers or windows service pack/hotfix.
4) Missing .NET 2.0 and it's service packs + hotfixes (some ATI drivers require .NET installed)

Can you post your specs?
motherboard make + model, ram, graphics?


one thing you need to check is that the board is powered properly, check that the
cable to the board exactly matches the socket it's in, the should be no socket holes
unfilled by the plug, try a different PSU if needbe,
if it happens with a new PSU, then you would need to remove the board from the case,
and check that none of the soldered joints are in contact with the bare metal,chassis, it might be an idea to cover the chassis with 2" pvc tape, if some of the joints do appear
to be big enough to make contact,
If it continues to happen, then the next suspect is a corrupt EEPROM, or micro component
controlling power in that area, the most obvious solution here would be to flash an updated
BIOS
Having done all that, and still experiencing problems, I'd bin the board and replace.

Firstly id do like Lippo said and turn on the STOP messages, that way when it restarts/"crashes" youll be able to see if its windows crashing or the pc itself resetting.

It could be a million things, but that would really really cut down which area to look, otherwise its pretty much speculation. That said it looks like a mobo/psu problem.

Well it can't be windows based, if you are having to f1 every time the pc has been off,
there's a problem with the board, the new battery should be able to supply the power
to keep the CMOS data, make sure the new battery is clicked in properly,
it should be flush all the way around it's seat
did you get the correct battery code?
one thing to try is to power down the pc, unplug the power lead, push and hold
the front power button on the pc for 10 secs, let it sit for a few minutes,
then boot up again... did you have to press f1 again?

firstly i would like to say that i no longer have to press f1 and startup and my date and time seem to be normal now (dont go to default)...i havent had a blue screen yet but its early days (been on 10 mins)

how does that affect things?

then it's most likely easily solvable.

first post suggests he replaced it already but was still going wrong.
maybe he took my advice and gave it a poke.

ive managed to jamb the right sized yogurt pot under my gfx card now, so i dont have to poke it so often.
I think the weight of the add on heatsink is quite a lot for the card to take, maybe it would be ok in a desktop, but mines a tower case, so the yogurt pot just holds it up a bit.

i replaced the battery, now my time and date work fine, dont press f1 at start up but i stil get the blue screen, saying

basicaly what that means is that a driver, wich runs at a high privilage level, is calling a function wich is in a task that is at a lower priority level.

this is bad becuase, well, it just is as it can cause al sort of problems, such as drivers hanging etc, so windows checks for this and throws a wobbly.

so it probably means a bad device driver. what usualy happens is a new apllication calls a driver in a way that it never showed up a fault before, so often the fix is to update all drivers where possible.

have you installed any new software lately ?

I did hear of some viiruses wich tried to modify the motherboard bios flash wich is scary.
it could also still be a virus casuing the BSOD, but could also be corupted file or something.

I normally get that error from incorrect disc controller drivers and bad sound drivers,
sometimes from display drivers too, you want to download the very latest drivers
for your hardware, starting with the exact driver for your motherboard / onboard audio
followed by the latest nvidia /ATi drivers, etc, reboot after each driver install

It may be the case that a reformat is needed, due to file corruption
but only after all other avenues have been exhausted with the latest drivers.

As i said before, make sure you do what Lippo said, so that you can write down any files/codes listed on the bluescreen (or take a pic of it and post it up here if you can), incase there is any further info to help clarify which driver or library is causing problems.

It might also be worth going start->run->"eventvwr.msc" and seeing if anything is being thrown up in the event log, particularly the system part.

It does look like its probably a ghey driver. See what you can update, especially the chipset drivers for your motherboard.

what's your motherboard make + model?
if this is happening with the last driver release for it, you need to email
their tech support,
try a complete re-install of the motherboard driver.
