Former captain David Beckham has been named in the England squad for the first time since the 2006 World Cup.
Coach Steve McClaren's U-turn means Beckham, 32, is set to start Friday's friendly against Brazil followed by the Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia. Fit-again Newcastle striker Michael Owen returns in place of Wayne Rooney, who is suspended for the Estonia game. England Head Coach Steve McClaren has named a 26 man squad for the forthcoming matches with Brazil and Estonia. David Bentley and Nicky Shorey, of Blackburn Rovers and Reading respectively, have been named for the first time after eye-catching displays in Friday's 'B' international victory over Albania. Chelsea's Joe Cole, whose season has been blighted by injury, will join up with the squad after a long period away from the international scene. England will play Brazil at Wembley Stadium - the Three Lions first visit to the new stadium - before travelling to Estonia for a Euro 2008 Qualifier on 6 June. England squad: Paul Robinson Scott Carson Robert Green Phil Neville Rio Ferdinand John Terry Wayne Bridge Wes Brown Jamie Carragher Michael Dawson Ledley King Nicky Shorey David Beckham Steven Gerrard Jermaine Jenas Joe Cole Aaron Lennon David Bentley Michael Carrick Frank Lampard Stewart Downing Kieron Dyer Peter Crouch Michael Owen Alan Smith Jermain Defoe The FA.com |

im sure alot will disagree but i dont think david beckham should ever have been left out of the england squad
bex always gives 100% when he played for his country, cant say that about all the other england players. you need to be a british lion when playing for england .. people seem to forget a certain free kick and the running around in the last ten minutes of that game that got us to the tournament in the first place.. Just watched a recent Real Madrid game v Seville. No one can make a long-distance pass like Beckham. 40-50-60 yards right to the attacker's foot, in stride. He should be on the squad until he can no longer walk.
If McClaren doesn't put him in the starting 11, I think there will be a lot of noise. And who will be the strikers? Owen and Crouch? An unlikely pair. Smith off the bench in the 65th? I hope we can see the Estonia match for less that $25 PPV. |

I've always said that Beckham, despite not being on top form in the last world cup, was the only one with any form at all, and he single handedly got england to the knock out stages, he either socred or caused to be scored every goal england had. anywho, for the so many people who think they know everything there is to know about football, but cant be bothered to look more than 45 minutes in any direction, i'm happy to say....told you so... ![]() Its a shame that no-one in the football industry or fans can see more than one game ahead or destroy someones career based on one game. I hope that Alan Hanson chokes on his witless prattling. I mean look at alex furgeson, he was given a few years in charge, that's what you get when you stick sith someone, not use them like a toilet roll and flush them out as soon as things get a bit tough. Scaegoats should be used sapringly in footbal imo. Anyway, i hope becks does well, and i really hope that he ends up having the best performance of any england player ever, just to show how a very very bad decision was made by the manager. It was a backlash against Sven rather than becks, but he copped it. I still feel that it's the players fault for the world cup, not sven. Our new manager hasnt exactly got a great record atm has he, and it makes me laugh when people said hes the only man for the job cos hes english and understands the game, lol. |

![]() Your post is basically saying Beckham should'nt have been judged on a few games (I beg to differ, Beckham has performed well on a handful of occasions and is useless the majority of the time, but the occasions where he does perform well are hyped by the media / seem to be the only games people remember) but you seem to condone McLaren being written off after not even being given a chance to get going. Hmmmm... |
