1. Ronnie Rosenthal vs Aston Villa
The genius of this miss is the surprise element. Even on repeat viewing Rosenthal looks so in control of the situation having rounded the Aston Villa goalkeeper and taken a touch to steady himself that you can't believe the ball will end up hitting the bar to the delight of the Holte End. But it does, every time.

2. Kanu vs Middlesbrough
Its difficult to think there has been a miss from so close to the goal that has failed even to hit the woodwork. To add to his misery it denied Bryan Robson a point in his first game in charge of Albion.

3. Arnaldo Vera vs Emelec
You have to see this miss to believe it. The Libertad defender nudges the ball past the opposition keeper on the six yard box and the rest of the players turn to the halfway line ready for the restart, but rather than let the ball cross the line tamely, he decides to make sure and blasts the ball vertically against the crossbar.

4. Diego Forlan vs Juventus
It just wasn't meant to be for Forlan at Old Trafford but he did provide much amusement, no more so when on this pre-season tour of America when he chased a lost cause, beat the Juventus keeper and defenders before hitting the side netting with an open goal.

5. Milenko Acimovic vs Fulham
Glenn Hoddle dubbed Acimovic the new Trevor Brooking when he signed him. As if that wasn't enough to put off Spurs fans not exactly fond of ex-Hammers, there was moment when he managed to clip the top of the bar from a Stephen Carr cross with the goal gaping from conservatively three yards out.

6. Ryan Giggs vs Arsenal
Roy Race once made winger Kevin Clark put a slipper on his right foot in training so that he improved his left. Sir Alex Ferguson may have wished he had done something similar to the Welshman at a formative age when Giggs rounded the Arsenal keeper before hitting over the bar with an open goal in this FA Cup tie. The nine titles probably make up for this though.

7. Roger Davies vs Chelsea
For football fans of a certain generation this is remembered as the "miss of misses". Davies rounded the Chelsea keeper before stumbling over the ball and falling onto the ground.

8. Steve Bruce vs Reading
Bruce scored two of the biggest goals in United's history against Sheffield Wednesday in 1993, but he also was guilty of one of the club's worst ever misses in this FA Cup tie when he side footed an open goal high wide and not too handsome.

9. Hugo Sanchez vs Atletico Madrid
Englishmen aren't in a position to sneer when it comes to remarkable penalty misses. Beckham (twice) and Chris Waddle have taken two of the worst but at least they stayed within the same postal code of the goalmouth. The great Mexican's against City rivals Atletico without exagerration finished nearer the corner flag.

10. Mazinho vs Sweden
There are reasons why the 1994 World Cup side is not looked back on with much affection by the Brazilian public - and it is the presence of players like Mazinho. In this instance Romario cut through the entire Swedish defence rounded the keeper and saw his shot cleared off the line as far as Mazinho on the edge of the six-yard box where, with time to pick his spot and plan a sequel to the 'baby celebration', he blasted the ball into the side-netting.
