Lewis Hamilton caught speeding in France

Formula One prodigy Lewis Hamilton has had his driving licence suspended for a month after being caught speeding on a French motorway, police said today.

Hamilton was at the wheel of a Mercedes CLK when he was clocked at 196 km/h (121mph) near the northern town of Laon on Sunday afternoon.

The speed limit on French motorways is 130 km/h (80mph) in dry weather and 110km/h (68mph) in wet conditions.

Police stopped him on the A26 motorway, which runs from Calais to Reims, detained the car and fined him 600 euros (429 pounds).

"He was very polite and cooperative,” said a police spokesman, adding that the 22-year-old had the car collected for him.

One commentator suggested that perhaps Hamilton thought he was on the racetrack rather than the motorway.

The McLaren driver was leading this year’s world championship until the last race of the season, when he was pipped to the post by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

With four wins last season he is seen as a strong contender for next year’s title.

His second position makes him the most successful rookie in the history of the sport.

Hamilton finished third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

He is moving from his home town of Stevenage in Hertfordshire to Switzerland.

See now if he had been driving a renault he would have got away with that and if he was williams or bmw he wouldn't have got caught at all as they would not even have been certain he was speeding in the prevailing conditions.
