Fans have backed Steve McClaren to stay on as England coach and blamed the players for recent poor performances in a survey for the BBC's Inside Sport.

A total of 452 fans were questioned by telephone in England between Friday and Sunday, before, during and after Israel's Euro 2008 win over Russia.

And the results show that 50% think McClaren should stay on as manager regardless of whether England qualify.

Meanwhile, 37% of the respondents think he should go regardless.

The numbers hardly changed regardless of whether the interviews were done before or after the Israel match - before the match 49% said he should stay on, afterwards it was 51%.

Most fans point the finger at the players for England's troubles, 50% saying they are at fault compared to only 22% who blame the manager.

A further 16% say the FA should be held responsible.

I personally think it's down to the players. Week in and week out we see them performing in the premiership yet we fail to see it at international level.

I'd say it's a combination of all 3 to be honest. the players aint trying hard enough, the manager simply isn't managing well enough and the FA is a complete farce.

I'd also add 1 other factor into the equation though and thats the media, I reckon the media hypes up England too much, raises expectations too much and destroys the players morale too much with the crap they constantly write.

The game these days, is too much about media and money and not enough about passion and pride.

Aye great point I don't know why I didn't include it as in previous arguements with friends and stuff that has always been thrown into the equation. Will add that into the options as well.

In the England team you can see that there is no passion at all well very little if so. Imo the biggest success in the United Kingdom is up in Scotland the thing that carried them so close to qualifying is their passion.

I have to agree with this: Every time England are in a cup the media go on about 1966 and how this year must be their year. It's 41 years ago, stop putting so much pressure on the players to win and the whole tournament and start concentrating on each match game by game.

England would perform so much better if they weren't just "expected" to reach the knockout stages of a championship. Take the rugby into consideration this year, nobody expected England to do so well as they did again. There wasn't as much pressure to perform, the players pulled it out of the bag and ended up in the finals. Who would have placed a bet on that at the start of the tournament.
