McLaren principal Ron Dennis says his team have yet to receive any formal contact from race stewards regarding a potential penalty for championship leader Lewis Hamilton.
It is believed Hamilton, 22, has been under investigation for erratic driving behind the safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix after new evidence - footage filmed by a fan from the grandstand at Fuji Speedway - indicated he may have contributed to an accident involving Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. The latter received a 10-place starting grid penalty for Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix for running into the back of the Red Bull driver and, if found guilty, it was thought Hamilton would suffer a similar punishment. A decision on any potential repercussions is expected some time later today, but Dennis said: "At the Japanese Grand Prix, after Lewis had left the circuit, the stewards wished Lewis to see some of the footage related to the race. "We called him at the hotel and by the time we located him, the stewards advised him they didn't need to see him and we have thus far not received any formal communication from the stewards they wish to see him again." Hamilton himself has not confirmed whether he has already met stewards this weekend regarding the incident, but expressed his disappointment at the prospect of any possible punishment that might be handed down. He said: "I don't really think much of it to be honest. I did the best job I could under extremely difficult circumstances with the rain, and I did the best job I could to stay out of everyone else's way. "It's the first real situation I've been in in the wet behind the safety car having to manage a gap between the guy in front and look out for everyone around you. "Your visor's completely fogged up, your mirror's completely fogged up, you're just scared of crashing into someone else, you're just trying to get out of the way and they're trying to put blame on me. "If you look, I did it every lap, that's the line I raced on because it was the dry line and that's probably why I won. "There was less water there but I always caught the pace car up. I pulled up alongside him, obviously I can't overtake him so I braked which was also giving me more heat in my brakes and my tyres. "I waited for him to go away and all of a sudden Mark appeared up alongside me, I decided to accelerate and the next thing I hear is a big thud. "He's allowed five car lengths behind me, I don't know why he was so close. "I had a good weekend, I don't think I put a foot wrong and I didn't do anything to harm anyone else or put anyone else in danger but I've come away to China and no doubt I'm going to be punished for something. "I just think it's a real shame for the sport. Formula One is supposed to be about hard competition, fair and that's what I've tried to do this year, just be fair. "If I've been in the wrong, I've been the first to put my hand up, or apologise at least, and I don't mind being given a penalty but there's been some really strange situations this year where I'm made to look the bad person or by the looks of it this weekend could be given a penalty. "It's just a shame for the sport and if this is the way it's going to keep going then it's probably not somewhere I really want to be." Webber said: "I would just like to make it clear that, although I criticised Hamilton's driving in yesterday's FIA Press Conference, at no time have I made any official complaint about anyone's driving following Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix." Here The video of what happened. I think it shows that the safety car was not paying attention and that Webber was too close to Hamilton. Hamilton braked because he had gone past the safety car not to cause any problems to the cars behind him, anyone can see that ! No wonder new drivers don't join F1, they are hardly encouraged!! |

I cant beleive he could see very well, it just looks like he couldnt see the pace car till he was to close rather than put the brakes on make people behind him more likly to pile up he puled out and slowed down, i think the drivers behind are as much to blame, but i gues they couldnt see at al either so realy the organisers shld be blamed for not doing something like stopping the race. I used to watch F1 a lot, but i think I saw so much i lost interest, after a while it was like yea cars going round and round fast, and tbh they dont look like theyr going so fast or as on the edge as much as the more old fashioned shape cars were wich I think were smaller wich made it look faster. |

If Lewis loses the title due to being stripped points and not down to a better driver beating him, simply because the likes of Webber and Alonso are being bad sports, I can seriously see him departing from F1 and going to America where they will appreciate his talent and where he really would be a megastar. It's rediculous that the most naturally talented driver to emerge since Michael Schumacher is being treat like a piece of dirt.
It really wouldn't surprise me if it is down to some dirty tactics from Alonso, as he's clearly been uphappy that he's been made to look average by Hamilton and he has been spitting his dummy at every opportunity he has had all season. I seriously hope Mclaren boot his ass out of the team when the season closes or make him fulfil his contract but without giving hm a ride. I liked the fella a couple of seasons ago but can't stand him now, simply due to the way he's been activing this season. |

As much as i would love Britain to have some decent sporting hopes for the future, im not entirely convinced Hamilton is as great as people are making out. Obviously hes winning the championship, which is impressive as a rookie, but the competition is fairly limited and he's had nothing but good fortune this season.
Ferrari had countless technical problems early on in the season with car reliability, which essentially left them lagging behind too much, leaving Maclaren with a major headstart for both Alonso and Hamilton. The media and commentators are making a bit much out of Hamilton's success imo. I think hes a great driver, certainly a competitive world champion, confident and with an amazing nerve while driving, but i dont think hes entirely been tested. Sundays Grand Prix had him driving pretty much a third of the race behind the safety car, and with all the world championship competition dumped at the back, including Alonsos suspicious pit stop straight back out into traffic, which they must have known when they screwed him over by bringing him in then. He was lucky to be rammed in the side without damaging his car, while others were unlucky to crash into eachother allover the place. Alonso piling into a wall clearly didnt have lewis's guardian angel watching out for him ![]() By comparison Raikkonen was dumped at the back of the grid from the start, and despite the conditions making driving hard, he managed to work his way overtaking countless people, leaving the track all the time because of the risks he was having to take and getting himself up into 3rd by the end of the race. Im not that into F1, although i do tend to watch it, friends who are crazy about it seem to think Raikonnen is probably the best driver and also that if other drivers like Kovalinen were given the chance to drive in one of the top cars theyd be more than capable of doing what Lewis has done so far. No discredit to him though, hes earnt what hes got, and hes very promising, but its hard to deny that he has had things running in his favour a lot, or rather bad luck for his main competitors. Edit: http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=40952 Apparently they went for a meeting about it today, a few hours ago and it was decided there will be no penalties. ![]() Last edited by Puratech; 05-10-2007 at 15:22. |
