80 GB PS3 On The Way?

Bloomberg is reporting that Sony is considering introducing a new Playstation 3 with a bigger hard drive in the wake of killing off their 20GB model.

``It's in line with our strategy as we had planed to choose models based on consumer needs,'' Fukuoka said. The larger model, which retails for $599 in the U.S. and is $100 more expensive than the smaller version, accounts for about 90 percent of sales, he said.

The company is also considering introducing the model with a bigger hard disk, Fukuoka said, without providing details.

I love that Sony seems so willing to shift around their model designs based on consumer demands, though I'd love to see a breakdown of how many of the 20GB PS3s went unsold. That 90 percent figure either means people didn't want the cheaper PS3 or they couldn't find them. I suspect the first, but I'd still love to see the hard numbers.

cant see them bringing out a new version of the ps3 with a bigger HDD, simply because the ps3's HDD is completely upgradable. i.e. might aswell just go out n buy a 300GB 2.5inch HDD for it

So lets put that into context they supply an extra 20GB hard drive which given profit margins and stuff lets say add £25 to the cost of the PS3.

Ok now lets take notice of the fact PS3 is selling for £400 now...

Hey they are bringing out another one with a bigger hard drive for the same price as the last one sold at at release.

Whats going on ? did they run out of 60GB drives so had to buy 80GB's instead or did the guy at the factory make a balls of the order

They probably predict that newer games will need you to 'install' more of the game onto the HDD.

Or maybe they just know us PS3 owners love pr0n.

I had to reply to this thread, regarding SCEE, bringing out another Version with an 80 HDD, I purchased my PS3 at the Full Whack of £469.00 GBP, at the time the offers that were available with the in store purchase of the PS3, I was informed that the offers had been cancelled, due to the store (Tesco) not actually selling enough consoles, but I was happy enough to purchase my beloved PS3, and to be truthful, there are so many tutorials regarding how to put a larger HDD into your PS3, and also one or tw of my friends have YDL, (yellow dog linux) upon their system.

I have followed SCEE through the years, and had to have the PS3.

I have played video games for a long time and love the online play on both systems???

I currently own the PS3, PSP, Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360, and crystal xbox version 1.1

I wouldn't let the disk size put you off, it's easy enough to upgrade it to what ever size you want.

When the TV-recorder add-on thing (Play TV is it?) comes out I'm thinking of getting a bigger HD, we'll see how the 60gb works out. I'm no where near filling it yet but that will change pretty quick if I start recording HD-TV on there.
