We've been hearing the rumblings for awhile now, but today it's official: The 20GB version of the PS3 is no more in North America.

If you own one, don't worry, it will continue to be 100 percent supported with software and services, according to SCEA's spokesman David Karraker. The decision, he said, was one made based on what consumers wanted.

Here's the official SCEA statement:

At launch, we offered two separate models of PLAYSTATION 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB sku, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.

There you go, the PS3 has slipped from two SKUs to one, the 360 has bloated from two to three.

About time, now get rid of the 360 core and Elite model and the world will be a better place....well less confusing.

Agreed, the core models are worthless if its 360 core or the 20gb PS3 and as for the Xbox Elite, its just trying way too hard to be a PS3.

I'd love to have an Xbox 360 Elite. Tryed leaving Viva Pinata on yesterday for a few hours while i slept to get some time on it, and i couldn't sleep!! Had to turn the darned thing off

I think the Wii is the best over all i would bother wasting my money on the PS 3 whast the point you could buy a 360 if you want that sorta power and come on can you get halo 3 and where else and b4 anyone says it dont even talk about having it on the PC. I agree that first person shot em ups are good on PC but halo on xbox all the way. Going back to th Wii have you bothered to look at Zelda twilight princess talk about amazing the Wii is buy far the best design for a console it adds something more to game play. Graphics we've seen it time and time again does it really matter. My fav first person shoter was on the N64 goldeneye if was fun to play arent we forgetting that this is a GAMES console.

True it is totally useless if you buy one brandnew but it does come in to its own on the secondhand market, you can pick a core system up for around £100, which imo is a very good price for someone who is wanting to give the 360 a try without having to commit to the full £280 price tag of the premium console, the price will drop even further with the release of the elite console which could mean 360 experience for as little as £80!?

GoldenEye was the leading fps on the N64 and at its launch one of the best graphiced games availible, try playing it now and see if you can suffer the graphics long enough to even compelet the Byelomorye Dam. Graphics do make a large difference and its only Wii fanboys who would say different.

Clearly Microsoft think people need more space or they wouldnt be releasing a bigger HDD version would they?? Most people i know (including myself) have filled there 360 HDD so the ps3 60gb one is not too much.
