Hello various members of the forum expecting a fight, Im not gonna give you one.
No, instead, for once, Im gonna give you the truth. I cant sell PS3s. Not through lack of trying. Infact, its in my best interests to sell PS3s as I a) Wanna be kept on b) Win the end of christmas prize for most stuff sold. However, when talking to customers, without fail, Im asked if we have any 60 gigs in. At which point I say no, at which point they either a) walk out b) ask where they can get the 60 gigs from or c) say "ive been told to get a 60 gig, what is the difference between the two?" When I tell them that the 40 gig dosnt have backwards compat, they tell me all about how they think its rubbish that it dosnt, and ask why Sony has stopped making the 60s. When I tell them the truth, as told by manager, that Sony were losing too much money, they either do a) or b) from above. Today alone, I could have sold 4 PS3s if they were 60 gigs. However, they wernt, thus customers either walked out, or considered a 360, or asked if there were any Wiis in. Ive posted briefly about this before here, the lack of backwards compat is seriously a deal breaker. We [ie, the collective floor staff where I work] cannot give the 40Gigs away, put simply, nobody wants a console with zero back compat. |

To be honest, when I heard that Sony had dropped the backwards compatibility from the new 40GB PS3 my drive to buy one dropped even more. If I'm honest, the sole reason why I'd buy a PS3 is to play MGS4. Aside from that, I don't particularly want a Blu-Ray player and I don't think there's much out for the PS3 that is high on my "Must Play" list.
If I'm perfectly honest, the 360 is getting more and more attractive all the time. I still think that the Wii is my favourite console of the current gen, purely 'cause I find a lot of the games immense fun which is ultimately what I want from that console. But if someone came to me right now and offered me the choice of a free 360 vs a free PS3 with any 3 games of my choice the 360 would win... Sony don't really seem to be doing themselves many favours for our market. But I think overall they're now selling more units, which is good. I don't want Sony to do a SEGA and fall out of the console market... |

They wont fall out of the console market. The problem still facing Sony is that the PS2 is still selling and having new games released for it, none of the other consoles are facing this problem.
The 360 has only got backwards compatibility like the Wii and that ( on 360 ) is not 100%. PS3 removing backward compatibility is attempting to move away from new PS2 games and get companies focusing on developing for the PS3, hence the drop in price of the development kit. They are desperate for dev's to write games for the PS3 and forget the PS2 and at the moment its not working because they were frigged by Microsoft forcing a premature release of the PS3 onto the market by selling the shoddy, bugged 360 a year early. The PS2 was still on Sonys books as their primary console at that point and the PS3 should have only really have been looking at a release by the end of this year and maybe even next. So basically atm Sony are falling into there own previous genius and trying to drop the most successful console in history in favor of a rushed next gen console and can't figure out how best to sell the idea to joe public ![]() |

I never understand why some people go "what no PS2 BC! Screw that! i dont want a PS3 now!" then goes to the 360s.
If PS2 games are that important to them why are they so ready to go to the 360 when thats got no chance at all of playing them. I still think Sony will see sense and shove the emulation software from the PAL 60GB into all 40GB via an update. If they can be pressured into lowering the price anything is possible. |

Here are the weekly sales for the PS3 and 360 in Europe and Australia as well as for the just the UK since the 40GB introduction.
Top figures of each week are Europe and Australia while the bottom ones are UK only. The number indicates units sold. 7th Oct ps3 38,286 360 60,720 ps3 6,997 360 17,534 14th Oct ps3 113,990 360 53,915 ps3 19,591 360 14,230 21st Oct ps3 107,988 360 48,188 ps3 18,030 360 11,922 28th Oct ps3 81,257 360 44,636 ps3 13,318 360 10,912 4th Nov ps3 65,984 360 47,022 ps3 10,760 360 13,050 11th Nov ps3 72,605 360 56,159 ps3 14,507 360 17,125 18th Nov ps3 79,923 360 64,747 ps3 16,845 360 20,599 In the last 3 weeks PS3 has only sold less then 25% of what the 360 has in the UK, so if your store cant give them away maybe you need better sales training or fresher breath ![]() I dunno what the SKU breakdown is but some places still have the 60GB versions in stock so it hard to tell what people are buying to account for the overall boost in sales just yet. After Christmas we should have a good indication on how the 40gb is doing as all 60gbs will be gone by then. |

Its a factor for me tbh, i currently have 2 PS2s has they so old one will play some others, while the other plays my other games which include all my PSX games too!
I REALLY dont wanna buy a new PS2 im just waiting for the right time to buy a PS3 next year, when it has atleast 2 games that i wanna play (none so far) and has backwards compatibility so i dont have to have my 360,ps2, and ps3 all set up in one station.........looks messy! So i really dont think i will be buying one unless they solve this problem in the UK market, seeing as the majority of major games coming out are being released on the 360 anyway! |

Lets face it tho Sony are not doing all that bad in Europe its the US that they don't seem to be making big headway into.
I know the figures in wedgy's siggy are out of date but even those show Japan on a +900k PS3 unit sale over 360. In "others" it shows PS3 has sold 50% of the units of the 360 ( which is about right for the time the respective consoles have been released ). The only area the PS3 is lagging behind is America where its only sold a quarter of the number of units as the 360. I'm not counting the Wii in this post as that console is not aimed at the same market and is like comparing a land rover, warrior, and Suzuki jeep they all perform similar tasks but obviously for different markets and with different levels of power, functionality and appeal. So America is Sony's biggest problem market according to those figures and therefore Japan where its outselling xbox are parting with the asking price for the 80Gb models and 60Gb models so are still having full supplies. "Others" are selling on there projection of growth in that they are holing there own and selling at a similar rate to the 360 but not swamping it, so instead of using our parts selling to them we will make a cut down version at a lower price ( as people were getting it cheaper in US and Japan anyway ) and use the 60Gb drives and the BC chips in America to keep up with unit demand and help swamp the market a bit more when demand picks up so they don't get units selling for $1000's on ebay. I reckon that Sony are trying some interesting market stratagies to get sales to improve and they must have figures to show that the majority of buyers already have a PS2 so don't really need it in the PS3 ( and it certainly gets them out of buggy emulation erors ). I'm sure they must have it in good order tho, they are not one of the big players for selling stuff off the cuff... |

Ive got the 60gb BC model and I havnt played a single PS2 game on it and I doubt I will, Simply because I have a PS2 so theres no point. Playing them on the PS3 means you lose your saves and rumble feature ( For the moment ). Which brings me onto another topic...
What the fuck didnt Sony put a PS1/2 memory card slot on the PS3? |
