The Russian Newspaper “Russia today” reports that a member of a Russian gaming clan from the tastefully titled “Coo-clocks clan” murdered a rival member of the “Platanium” clan in the city of Ufa after virtual violence and arguments online spilled over into the real world.
The two groups had an online “fight” as it were in an unknown game (possibly Lineage II) at the end of December and this apparently lead to the groups arranging to meet up and have it out in real life. A 33 year old man only known as “Albert” from the “Platanium” clan was badly beaten and died of his injurys in the ambulance. The alleged assailant, a 22 year old man from the “Coo-clocks clan” apparently has shown no remorse, and refused to justify his actions. His fellow clan members in the Coo-clocks clan “continue to harass the family of the murdered man, threatening to kill his sister, who hasn’t turned on the computer for days”. She later said; “I think they have confused the game and reality. And after we buried him [Albert] on 31 December, they continued to threaten us.” The Platanium clan was mostly made up of experienced gamers over 30 while the Coo-clocks clan are mainly students in their twenties. |

Ok... Anyone ever says to me that computer games don't lead to violence again is getting linked to this thread, which once again clearly shows that some people seriously can NOT distinguish beteen a virtual world and reality.
I'd say it's only a matter of time before something like that starts happens regularly in this country, having seen how protective and defensive people get about their beloved online gaming guilds/clans and their virtual friends. Hey, even I got all aggressive in a game when someone started bullying members of our tribe, but at least I know the different between a bit of petty name calling and going out and physicially killing someone. I mean these days with online gaming, for some people it's not just about pixels and online friends, it has actually become a way of making a living for them by buying and selling ingame items and gold, so in that aspect it is easy to see the potential for that to spill out into the real world when someone treds on someone elses turf. |

There are those out there that cant keep ingame stuff ingame. I had to shut down one of our guilds forums because of a fool taking stuff too far and being very threatening and abusive. (thats going back to mir2 days) Im sure theres more of it goes off than gets in the press too.
I remember the last mirstock, one of the guests, who shall remain namelss, got it into his head that the marquee should have been a safe zone and that it wasnt and people where going to pk him, he was sat in the corner crying! Since one of my kids kicked my mates daughter in the cheast after watching power rangers Iv tried to keep an eye on what they watch and more on what they play. I dont know what gets into the heads of people that bring ingame violance into the real world they must be missing something from their brains! |

Yeah but how did they manage to meet up to do a murder?
Both sides must have known there was going to be a ruck. I think if I arranged an online fight in Russia with a group basically called We Kill Niggers then I would show up with a load of Klashnikovs because those Russian skinheads are complete ruffians my dear. |

ahh the LLagffs days,
i do remember going on a quest with moon to get beer, and was cheeky (or was that drunk) enough to get some from qgo. i still got some photo's from that event, and still remember the stories. but it is true, gaming has led to some people going OTT and not separating r/l and game life. |

ive never heard anything so bizzare!
i really do think some ppl actually beleive that the virtual world of comps are real, and i have noticed how a lot of ppl have no clue how to communicate any other way. one family i know, communicate almost soulely via msn, and have very few freinds offline, how sad (and by that i dont mean they are sad, i mean it is sad) theres nothing nicer than a good old natter with your friends, its as if ppl cant interact wihtour being behind a screen anymore ![]() |

In order to stop this sort of thing to happening, you'd need to ban all entertainment or anything people can get even remotely attached to. |
