I just got back to posting on here, one thing that seriously does my head in, is the ads 'clicking' but the worst is when they stop you typing your post because an advert is now the selected window!!! GRRRR anyone else have this prob? I appreciate the site needs the ads to continue, I even click them to help out, but when they interupt your post, kind of annoying.
any fix???? |

Phasor - People only need to click an advert if the advert interests them now, there is no request for users to go out their way to do any more. I don't quite get what your saying regarding it stopping you posting because it becomes your selected window though, do you mean it opens a new window, or that it somehow makes the framed window your selected window somehow? I dunno what browser your using, but i've never experienced that in Firefox or IE, it's not something that should be able to happen at all though, as it's nothing more than a basic page in a frame. Unfortunately there's nothing can be done about the clicking from this end, that is a browser option, I do believe it is something that can be corrected in browser options though. |

well im sorry you feel that way, I presume you still get revenue from most of the things, it only blocks the realy intrusive aspects and dodgy sites, but I wasnt suggesting any of your stuff is actually dodgy, although every now and then things seem to slip through wich youre unhappy with.
it doesnt stop you from clicking on things usualy, although sometimes you have to go and find the entry wich it has blocked and remove it, ive bought several things of adverts from TF, and ive tried to look for things I want to buy on TF, and when TF was a lot younger I used to click like crazy on stuff to support it. ive recently discovered fiddler wich tells you all about what hosts are being accessed so you can find out what sites are being blocked if theres a problem, and remove them from the hosts file. its only a problem if you try and use the forums a lot, but most of the time total format is used by unique visotors wich are non forum users. I only use the forums, i hardly use the rest of the site, maybe the odd flurry at the arcade, and a handfull of pictures. if it was just a small forum id be happy to pay a contribution. but I visit many forums now, (mostly technical) non of them are this hevily laden with adverts or require donations. the number of long time regulars posting consitently now is quite low, it cant cost that much in terms of bandwidth to support just the regular users. I even investigated running a temporary forum from my own pc via broadband when TF was down for an unexpectadly long time, it would of done it wothout spending any extra money with open source software. oh and i forgot good to see youve come back phasor ![]() I realy cant see how you can expect anyone to use the forums with adverts wich are so intrusive they stop you typing a reply without some sort of blocking mechanism. most things have pop up blockers on the status bar such as the gooogle one but I find they interfere with things too indiscriminatly. I think a great number of people have been forced to do something like this, wether its a pop up blocker or what ... I only did this when it sudenly got laden with pop ups very slow to load and so frustrating to type replies, and to be honest it was frustrating to have to do so just to use this site. maybe this is why we have a lot of new users but but they are never heard from exept for the spammers ? |

I guess the question here in that case is, is this some weird Firefox thing which isn't obviously effecting my version of Firefox, because it effects nothing at all for me using IE, which is my default browser. I'm not sure how you can call TF heavily laden with adverts though. Most pages of TF only have 1 rotating advert box at the top of the page. Far far less than most sites. |

this page has 2, I dont mind that, they are not blocked by my hostfile and I can still see them and click on them if I wish. so i gues 'heavily laden' is a bit unwaranted now sorry.
but there was a time when it was more of a problem and people were mentioning it, particularly when some adverts were cuasing the whole page to freeze. maybe youve got it under control now so thats good, but i just thought its all coming back again but wait I just re read the original post, I think he means hes actually clicking on the links. I thouht he meant the links were clicking themselves somehow. |

Mine does it aswell, the sound windows uses when you click a link keeps happening from time to time with TF open, its quite irritating, im not sure entirely whats happening but im fairly sure its some part of the site, be it an ad banner, or part of TF refreshing itself.
I also use a modified hosts file, which blocks a massive number of ads/popups and such. Its not to block TFs adverts, but to block the malicious crap i get on various sites, popups and stuff. It seems quite a lot of TFs adverts dont get blocked by the hosts file im using, which is cool ![]() Id really like a bit more control over a browser in the first place tbh. |

with fiddler you can see exactly what internet requests are being made and the responses,
you can see this page is re loading from several specific sites every few seconds. fiddler can also intercept specific urls i think although i havnt tried this yet. so you could theoretically just block the stuff wich is intrusive and/or anoying but not block the stuff wich creates revenue. |
