Browsing without logging in gives me this message. I thought I'd check if anything interesting was happening whilst I'm at work, but didn't really want to login. This is kinda annoying.

I'm on the fence as to whether or not I think its a good "feature" for making new people register. What does everyone else think?

well, im usually put off by things like that cos usually, to sign up you have to fill it looooads and crap, then do that silly robot checker thing where u type random letters, THEN you have to validate your email .etc - its alot of messing around just to sign up

so.. i dunno if its a good idea or not ^^

You only get that message after viewing 5 threads as a guest. Most visitors finding TF via Google would normally only look at 1 thread which they've found using a Google search term. The 5 thread thing is for those that go on to view more than that, as a way to get them to sign up if they want to view more.

It's a known technique that a lot of sites use to encourage more sign ups and the benefits do outweight the negatives.

You do realise, that function has actually been set in place for 11 months already and isn't something that's just been freshly added, right...

I can't say I like it either. I didn't know tf had it but I'm always logged in. First time I saw this mod was a couple of weeks ago while browsing some webmaster forum I came across. I got that message come up and thought to myself "I'm only browsing, do I really care enough about what I was looking through right now to be arsed with the whole email registration thing? Nah..." and then clicked the X. I also didn't like being told to basically "register or gtfo".
