C&C Red Alert 3
Uh oh, the Soviet men (Tim Curry and Andrew Divoff) have invented a time machine and gone back in time to kill Einstein so the West can't have uber-weapons. Somehow they overlook the fact that they won't have them either and they change the entire course of history.
Russia is more powerful and they have plasma tellys and everything, but in this new present, there is a new threat. Asian fellows.
Red Alert 3 has three teams now instead of the traditional Allies vs Soviets, Asian fellows. The dodgy green-screen cut-scenes are back too, and people like Jonathan Pryce, Jenny McCarthy, George Takei and Gemma Atkinson play the parts with traditional wooden aplomb.
The three teams (in single-player) are basically the 3 difficulty levels, Soviets are Easy, Allies are Medium and the Asian fellows are Hard. Units are all different from before because those assholes changed the past, but some all-time classics remain like Tesla coils. The graphics are obviously better too, you still can't zoom in and out but it is much more colourful and there are more confusing (at first) options, like special weapons and research all seem to be 1 extra click away than they were before.
Still, if you are a fan of the game and love all the different Command and Conquer episodes then you will like this new one. Red Alert 2 was possibly the best one ever and this one constantly reminds you of that, using Tanya to snipe out the baddies, zapping shit with Teslas, the dodgy Russian accents, it's all there in updated form.
It seems like it's perhaps deliberately old-school, playing on the whole nostalgia thing, I'm not sure exactly what you will make of it if you never played C&C before, or if you only played the last one, but it works for me. PS1 fun is back but more colourful and with sexier babes inexplicably working as generals in the military.
I heard there are some problems with SecuROM copy protection for n00bs, but search around online and you can learn how to.
All new EA games have it, and that's why so many people are boycotting them. Some clever people figured out how to break it though so it doesn't bother me.
It's a good game, a refreshing change from First Person Shooter 2009 mark 5 v16.135. Like every other new popular big-budget game for sheep.
