Wii sells 105,000 in record-breaking launch

Nintendo and ChartTrack have confirmed to MCV this morning that Wii sold 105,000 units over its opening weekend in the UK - and has become the fastest selling home console in chart history.
It is the first time any console has broken the 100,000 mark over an opening weekend, and with handheld DS shifting around 110,000 in the same week, it tops off a bumper week for platform holder Nintendo.

The new format has trumped previous record-holder Microsoft’s launch weekend with Xbox 360, which saw 70,000 units sold.

While retailers remain hopeful that more stock is forthcoming, it seems Nintendo Wii is already off to a flying start.

Great news for Nintendo. Nice to see that the DS is still selling super huge amounts, on a normal week it sells more than a new console O_O. Lets just hope Nintendo can continue to supply Wii's to the UK to meet as much demand as they can before Christmas.

im sorry but the ps3 actually has new components in that havent been mass produced before, the wii is just an overclocked GC made with smaller sized components therefore it is REALLY EASY to mass produce them as the components have been already in production since the GC days anyway and i would actually be very very suprised if they had trouble making wii's.

now with the 360 and ps3 you actually have new tech inside (new processor and gpu)and even more so for the ps3 as they are going with a new disk format ontop and blu-ray drives havent even been mass produced before the ps3 came out. you see this is why both the 360 and ps3 had production problems as they actually went with new hardware which is why they are both expensive in the first place...unlike the wii.

i think the ps3 is doomed before we even get it.

untill i play it i cant be sure, its just a hunch atm backed up by there shoddy launch and mostly the rubbish i read about it.

If it was because if the tech being harder to produce it would show just how stupid Sony and MS were for not starting early enough.

Its nothing to do with the tech, Sony is the biggest electronics manufacturer in the world and could easily make thousands a day with all their factorys. They just forgot to stock up on Blue Laser Diode first.
They too had like 4 million planned by end 06 before the shortage came out.

360 didnt get enough out at launch because MS was being lazy and simply didnt make enough for the Nov 05 deadline they insisted on.

So i guess they were still pritty stupid.

yea i do think they were stupid starting later but this was because they didnt have the features clearly down in time (e.g they added in hdmi very late in the lower end ps3), i think this all stems from the fact they were stupid to have 2 versions of the ps3 in the first place, i simply dont get why they had 2 versions, just have the higher end one price at about $550/£399 and be done with it imo.

also how can you say it isnt down to tech when its blu-ray that is the main factor in the ps3 being delayed now? it quite clearly is

Very dissapointed tbh, 105k units doesn't sound all that good to me at all. Their wanting to sell what? 6m by the end of this year and theyve totally sold out in the UK already...they should have had 300k+ units for sale in the UK last weekend and even then that would have been probably just enough.
Personally I think (same for all new techs) that they make too few units available so that it creates media hype saying the item is "sold out" just to grab a few headlines and get some free advertising.
Hopefully their will be thousands more made available in time for Crimbo. A Dr. at my mams work has paid £700 for a Wii with three games just because their son had to have one for Christmas its people like this who raise the prices of things on eBay.
