I’ve always been interested in learning to play an instrument and fortunately at the moment I’ve got some spare cash so thought it would be an excellent time to get one bought and start learning, so does anyone know what would be an easy instrument to start out on and any cheap places to buy a new or used one?

The only instruments I've ever had any skill with are drums, keyboards, piano (and yes, there is a difference) and guitar. Of the four, I think I get the most enjoyment from playing rock songs on my guitar but piano was definately the easiest to learn (for me).
I'd say go for the guitar - but don't skimp and get a totally cheapo one. You want something good enough that it's worth playing, but not so ****e that you won't be able to sell it 2nd hand and get some of your cash back. A Strat would be a good choice of electric, and Yamaha make nice acoustics imho. ![]() |

As for buying a guitar from eBay, I'd recommend against it. 1) You don't have the chance to try the guitar like you would if you went to a local music store. You could end up buying one that's uncomfortable for you to play, and your playing will suffer if that's the case. 2) There's always the risk of damage in transit, and yes I do know people who've bought guitars from the net thinking they're saving money only to have them arrive damaged, and they end up paying more in shipping the damn thing back for repairs/replacement. Imho, I'd recommend you get into a local instrument store and try out a handful of guitars that are in your price range and decide which you like the best and which is most likely to make you play. You can also try out the guitar with a selection of different amps to see which one you like the sound from best. Can't do that on eBay. ![]() Just my ![]() |

Electric guitars are pretty useless without an amp. If you're short of the cash for an electric and amp, I'd suggest you go for an acoustic. Bit trickier to start with 'cause the bodies are fatter, but at least the sound will be audible.
If I can find my mic, I'll record what my electric sounds like with and without amp for you if you want. Last edited by Seth; 24-09-2005 at 17:49. |
