Meet Dave
Eddie Murphy's new film stars him as an alien spaceship. And the captain of the spaceship.
The aliens are tiny little guys who have come to Earth to steal away some resources from us. They all control different parts of their body-ship thing, some in the arms, some in the mouth, some in the bum etc. It's a bit like that Numskulls cartoon from the Beano with all the little guys controlling the big body.
They are nice little guys but they don't know about emotions or expressing themselves like human beings do. They become fascinated by us and end up developing little personalities of their own.
Their main objective seems to be finding a special rock they lost, which a little kid has. So the big daft Eddie Murphy spaceship thing has to try and become friends with the kid and his rather attractive mum, in order to get the special thing back.
It's funny, Murphy plays a daftie quite well, but inside the ship, the tiny little Murphy is a smart guy.
This film seems to have been roundly panned by the critics, I think most of them are still angry about Norbit, because this is inoffensive, family-friendly, silly and fun.
It's main message is a good one as well, that people should celebrate their differences and be proud of being different, important for young kids just beginning to experience peer pressure to remember.
The plot doesn't exactly make a whole load of sense, why did the little guys come exactly? Why was the spaceship made in the captain's image? Why were they so happy to leave without getting what they came for (oops spoiler), and how do they all speak English and have black/white/asian versions even though they are from another galaxy?
Nevermind because it's meant for kids who won't notice those things.
It's fun and a good film to watch if you need cheering up, or have youngsters and don't want to take them to see scary stuff.
