The Other Boleyn Girl
Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Eric Bana, Kristin Scott Thomas, David Morrissey.
Dir: Justin Chadwick (Byker Grove, Spooks, Bleak House)
This is a dramatisation of the life of Anne Boleyn, 2nd wife of Henry VIII. The one who tricked him into divorcing Catherine, breaking away from the catholic church and who eventually got her head cut off for shagging her brother.
It's obviously a period drama which will put a lot of people off, but the cast is good, the dialogue succinct and it does paint a believable world. Perhaps too believable because sometimes the actual historical evidence is a bit thin to back up the storyline, and some obvious editing of facts such as Mary Boleyn only having one child.
But overall it's good, those two girls changed Britain a lot by their actions and it's educational at least. Especially when people generally know Henry VIII and the fact that he had a heapload of wives, not too many people will know all the stuff they go on about in the film.
It's exciting, it deals with supreme power, corruption, rape and incest. And the history of Britain.
Watch it if you liked: Elizabeth 1 and 2(The Golden Age), Atonement, Shakespeare in Love, or any of the countless Jane Austen/Eyre type BBC period drama things girls like.
