'In Bruges' starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Feinnes. Written and directed by Malcolm McDonagh.
Hitmen Farrell and Gleeson are sent to Bruges, Belgium, to await a phonecall from their boss 'Harry'. Ray (Farrell) hates it there, thinks its gay and boring and full of old crappy buildings. Whilst Ken (Gleeson) loves the history and the fabulous beers and the canals etc. What begins as a sort of seen-it-all-before-20-times 'Odd Couple', changes into something else. The language is at times outrageous, straight from the streets of Belfast, swearing, racism etc. But it is funny and not particularly offensive because of it's realism. The dialogue itself is worthy of note, I thought it was particularly well done. Gleeson plays very well and completely different to his 'Mad-Eye Moody' portrayal in the Potter series. Farrell does well too although his outward facial expressions of what he is supposed to be thinking are slightly overdone and makes his character look slightly retarded. This film is dark to the point of nihilism, it includes moderate violence, strong language, racist midgets and heavy drug use/abuse. I have been careful not to disclose any plot points after the initial set-up and if you watch it, you will understand why. It's a fairly simple story but brought to life with an amazing setting, some nice camerawork and brilliant character interplay. I can't wait to visit Bruges after seeing how beautiful it seems in this film. Tef rating; not for under 15s. Real rating 18. |

Normally I keep pretty much up with you when it comes to movie watching, i'm really behind at the moment though, mainly due to saving money and not getting out to the cinema much due to the cost.
I'm not normally a fan of this type of film, but want to give this a go as it sounds quite good. |

I was quite suprised, the random trailers id seen had made it look like an action flick with proper stupid comedy (the jump out the hotel window scene). It had that kinda dark raw feeling to it which i liked, some nice dry humour and fairly good characters, but the plot itself was a bit lacking and not overly well executed. It scores points for the midget race war and other funny bits like that, but there was also quite a lot of irrelevant dull chat.
I liked watching to recognise scenery, and to be fair the place is as pretty as its made out to be, but its also a lot smaller than i felt the movie made it out to be. Its pretty much only the small town centre area thats all cobbled with old buildings and little alleys and its loaded with tourist shops, chocolate shops and cafes. Dunno if it was just me but i felt the movie portrayed or let you assume it was like a belgian prague when the vast majority of it is set in the main square. |
