Two of the film industry’s most reclusive and revered stars were thrown under the spotlight last night at the Baftas, Britain’s answer to the Oscars, but only one went home with a prize.
Daniel Day-Lewis, 50, hailed as the Laurence Olivier of his generation, boosted his chance of Oscar glory next month by winning the Best Actor award for his role as a tyrannical oil prospector in There Will be Blood. But Julie Christie, 66, left empty-handed, even though it was assumed widely that her portrayal of an Alzheimer’s sufferer in Away From Her would earn her the Best Actress prize. Instead, the award went to a 32-year-old French actress, Marion Cotillard, for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. Critics had described Cotillard’s depiction of the singer, from the age of 19 through to her harrowing death at 47, and her delivery of Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, as “goosebump-inducing”, but few had predicted her win because Baftas, Oscars and Golden Globes tend to relegate foreign films to their own categories. Picking up her Bafta, Cotillard was breathless with excitement. She said: “Wow, wow, wow . . . It has been the most incredible adventure. I loved every single second of the shooting. We worked with the most amazing crew and cast. You guys put so much passion in it.” Day-Lewis followed Cotillard on to the stage and joked that her performance was so extraordinary that she ought to have his award as well. Bafta believed that it was the first time a French actress had won. Although Audrey Tautou was nominated for Amélie in 2002, she did not win. The Orange British Academy Film Awards, chosen by the 6,000 voting members of the British Academy of Film and Television, have been regarded as a barometer of who might win at the Oscars since they were brought forward by several weeks in 2001. Last night’s prizes for Day-Lewis and Cotillard are significant pointers towards possible glory in Hollywood next month. Both of them, and Christie, have been nominated for Oscars. Keira Knightley’s omission from the winners’ list was among several disappointments for the makers of Atonement. Although the period drama about a doomed wartime romance won Best Film, as well as Production Design, it had been showered with 14 nominations, including Best British Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Costume Design, and Make-up and Hair. Joe Wright, whose first film, Pride & Prejudice, won him the Bafta for Most Promising Newcomer three years ago, watched as all those awards went to other film-makers. Atonement’s three lead stars — Knightley, James McAvoy and 13-year-old Saoirse Ronan — were all nominated for the story of lovers whose romance is shattered by a jealous younger sister. McAvoy lost out, however, to Day-Lewis, who was singled out for his towering performance, hailed by one critic as the greatest that he had seen. Arriving for the ceremony at the Royal Opera House, Day-Lewis, who was coaxed out of a three-year selfimposed retirement by Martin Scorsese in 2003, said that there had been some fantastic English films this year, adding: “I am quite pleased to be part of the circus . . . because it is a good year.” The Best Director prize went to the Hollywood film-maker Joel Coen who, with his brother Ethan, directed No Country for Old Men. Javier Bardem’s chilling performance as a killer trailing a man who made off with a fortune in drug money received the Best Supporting Actor award. In a touching gesture, the Best Actor category had included the late Ulrich Mühe, the German actor who died of stomach cancer last July aged 54, just as he had become an international film star for his mesmerising performance as a Stasi officer in The Lives of Others. The film won the Foreign Film prize. Collecting the award, the director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck paid tribute to his lead actor. “When producers were dropping out and financiers lost faith, and no distributor would touch it, he was willing to stand by this production for free. Without him, there would be no Bafta,” he said. And the winners are . . . The singer, 24, had been due to attend the 50th annual US awards, but visa problems last week meant that she had to agree to perform via satellite from a British studio. In Hollywood, writers who had threatened to pull the plug on the Oscars awards ceremony were ready to end their three-month strike last night after reaching an agreement with studio chiefs over royalty payments. The writers could be back at work by Wednesday. The Oscars are due to take place on February 24. Favourites lose out at Bafta awards |
