It doesn't matter if you've never seen star trek before,
this movie wipes the slate clean with a refreshing new approach, and filmed
in a completely different style to the previous 10 movies, with a new cast of actors
filling the roles of Kirk,Spock, and McCoy etc,
forget the techo babble, and corny plots and tired phaser fights,
this movie has all the adrenalin of a military style fast paced thriller,
brutal violence, raunchy sexyness, tear jerkers and explosive action,
complemented by an excellent musical score, the old style space scenes
and battles have been completely redesigned to put the viewer right where
the action happens,
there's homage paid to the old franchise in the form of the odd familiar 1 liners,
and we even find out why Kirk calls Dr McCoy 'bones'
Leonard Nimoy's brief appearances as the older Spock bring
pleasant sentiment to the proceedings,
having JJ Abrams direct this film was possibly the best thing Paramount
could have done, when the closing credits and outro music begin,
you will sit stunned in your seat yearning for more, this movie
is, in my opinion, a good candidate for movie of the year.

Seems very much action oriented, which, depending on how I'm feeling when I do see it, could be a good or bad thing. Looks like I'll be able to drag along my girlfriend to see it as well
The very most toppest most excited'ed i've been about the imminent seeing of a movie i've been for a long long time is this. Even the new Terminator film pales into insignificance for me compared to it and i'm not really even that much of a trekker.
well , maybe i'd hyped it up too much in my head before hand , but i was pretty disappointed , i know this is a franchise reboot , but old JJ & the team took a few too many liberties IMHO .
1stly JJ has been adamant that he hated the whole time travel cop outs of previous outings TV & Film , yet the whole premise of this film revolves around a broken time line .
I was pretty taken aback by the way a lot of the "cannon" of the series has been thrown out the air-lock , bye bye Vulcan , bye bye family members ( characters that survived 4 tv series & several films , dead ) .I know it won't matter to a lot of non trek fans , but i'm sure there were a fair few fan folks who's jaws are still scrapping off the floor .
The "set-pieces" were great , the special effects also ( albeit with a tad too mauch shaky/steady cam) , but couldn't really warm to any of the characters & some of the gags verge a little too close to farce , i could laugh at the swollen hands gag , but Scotty being sucked around the water pipes in the engine room was a belly laugh too far for me .
Am i really gettting too old & grumpy for Star Trek ?
The core of the original series was the relationship between Bones , Spock & Kirk , this reboot seems to want the emphasis on a different triangle altogether , the love triangle between Uhura , Spock & Kirk .
Maybe number 2 will hit the mark for me better , as it stands , i feel a little cheated by it all . 2 & a half outta 5 i'm afraid
My feelings fall between Mars and Chakotay. As a movie, it was excellent, and the characters played their parts well. Lots of homage to the canon (Archer's beagle - heehee!), with little damage overall. However, there were scenes that were either useless or too long. The ice planet chase was ridiculous. Couldn't he have just fallen down a crevass and voila? I agree with Chakotay on the Wonka reference with Scotty in the water tubes - clever situation, but why over do it?
Uhura plays as empathetic and strong, which worked for me. Sulu's training gag was fun too. I agree that they didn't need to blow away Vulcan.

is a bit hyperbolic. And there was way too much running down the corridors. Just hit the intercom dammit!
The time-travel hook is a necessary evil, which unlocks the writers from having to follow along exactly as before. Certainly better than the lame excuse in TNG and/or Enterprise as to why the first Klingons had no ridges.
So long as the Borg are several years away, I'm happy with this re-boot.

ooooo i hadn't considered the fact that they could meet the Borg now in this time line , perhaps all is not lost , if they can make the Borg threatening again & not the joke they became then i'll be happier
perhaps JJ & Co didn't totally escape the "curse" of the odd numbered Treks ..
I went along to see this yesterday and enjoyed it from start to finish, The new actors in the old rolls did amazing and had me hardly thinking about the old actors, Kirk however, as much as I liked his acting seemed to be further away from the original kirk, but that could be because I used to think of him as a bit of a joke.. I like the new kirk, cant wait to see the next movie
I agree with Mars, saw it at cinema, and being a bit of a trekker myself It is exactly as you say. The slate is wiped clean, and although if you really know your Trek there are some big continuity problems, you can easily forget them.
Theres some stuff in there for the die hard trekker, and for the first time tyhe Kobiashi Maru is explained as it was in books and (other) legend. It had the feel of the orignal franchise, and it stuck to the rules of trek. I ws thoroughly entertained, and at the end of it, thought that a whole new "original" series could be done on the back of it.
It has re-established Star Trek as it was, one of the most successful networked series ever. It was modern but loyal to the original. The CGI wasnt overpowering and allowed the retro feel fo the series.
I loved it, and would recommend everyone to watch it. I will certainly be buying the DVD when it comes out.
Just as an addition I liked the kirk smacking head scene, a homage to ST5 and Scotty. I'd like to think of this movie as re-introducing itself to a new generation like Battlestar Glactica. Not totally a remake of the original but as a standalone a great intorduction to the genre.
This has broken the odd number Trek curse. 2, 4, 6 being the best, and 2 +6 being the best of the best
I actually enjoyed it, I look forward to the next one. I wasn't sure at first at it seem convinent that they just happen to change time to make way for any continuty problems that may have occured.
I am not too sure about the love scene between Spook and Uhura, I think they could have done without that. I think they only need a sympathy friend, not a relationship. I just like him as he was.
I love how they still have a good relationship between McCoy and Kirk. I feel they all did well to keep the characters alive. Maybe some of the one line gags were a little in your face but it wasn't too over the top.
I wonder if Tuvok is still going to be around....poor Voyager XD
Anyway I think I need to see another film or two before I am throughly convienced.
After reaqding peoples responses I think everyone is right when they say the film did a great job of reinventing the series. It stayed loyal to the franchase but came up with a lot of new interesting stuff.
Having said all that though if it was a stand alone movie I actually think it was pretty poor. Spock annoyed the hell out of me and I didn't like how the characters kept slying their way to the positions they got. For example Scotty gets picked up off some ice planet and becomes chief engineer for a star ship? Also as already meantioned the "comedy" was a bit too slap stick.
The whole story was daft, forget the time travel bit it's the fact that the Romulans wanted revenge against Spock that bothered me. All Spock did was arrive too late to help them, it was nothing done on purpose and the deaths of the Romulans was down to natural causes not the Vulcans so why kill an entire race of people in revenge?
