 Gandhi is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century for his success in securing India's independence from British rule through non-violent civil disobedience. After India won its independence, Gandhi focused on promoting Hindu-Muslim peace and unity, but he was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic.
