Default Shenmue 3

Taken from OXM forums. Thanks to user "the best bit". However I dident want to link directly because it would breach the TF forum rules.

IN A NUTSHELL: Shenmue 3 is almost complete, yet nobody has bought the rights to it yet. However it will most likley appear on the Xbox 360 first.

He shall come from a far eastern land across the sea.

A young man who has yet to know his potential.

This potential is a power that could either destroy him

or realize his will. His courage shall determine his fate.

The path he must traversed brought with adversity.

I await whilst praying, for this destiny

predetermined since ancient times.

Awaiting in anticipation. A dragon emerges from

the earth as ominous clouds fill the sky.

A phoenix descends from the heavens

trailing purple from its wings. The pitch-black

night unfolds with the morning star as its only light.

And thus, the saga begins.....And soon it will end

Yu Suzuki

Sega's leading game producer and creator of Shenmue

Born on Jun 10th, of 1958. Born and raised in Iwate prefecture. Majored in Electronic Science at Okayama University of Science. Joined Sega Enterprises in 1983.

The extraordinary talents of Yu Suzuki as a game creator are widely known throughout the world, but his talents extend beyond that of Electronic Entertainment. He has a deep and profound love of music and art. Taught by his father to appreciate art and music from his young childhood, Yu Suzuki has profound knowledge and insight into these fields, and even spent his days in junior high school studying calligraphy and illustrations.

He joined Sega as a programmer and a producer, and in his second year he created the first in the world simulation arcade game, "Hang On". After "Hang On", as a pioneer of simulation games, he released many hit titles such as "Out Run". He also set eyes on the high potentials of CG board in the forefront of technology at the time.

In 1993, he created a global sensation with the release of "Virtua Fighter", a 3d computer graphics fighting game. This Virtua Fighter series was highly recognized by the Smithsonian Institution, as an application which made great contribution to the society in the field of Art and Entertainment, and for the first time ever in Japanese Game Industry, became a part of the Smithsonian Institution's Permanent Research Collection on Information Technology Innovation, and is now kept perpetually at the Smithsonian's National Museumof American History in Washington D.C. He vitalized games both culturally, and technologically, and is a meritorious man in the Amusement Industry. His latest achievement is The Academy of Interactive Arts and Science's (AIAS, for short) prestigious Hall of Fame Award. The Hall of Fame Award, a "Lifetime Achievement". Yu Suzuki has left Am2 and currently runs his own studio with Digitalrex.

Project Berkley
Project Berkley was the code name Am2 called Shenmue before it's official title name was announced, this disk was released along with Virtua Fighter 3tb in Japan in 1998. The disk consisted of a cg intro, a look back into Yu Suzuki's past games and his views about his upcoming title Shenmue which he defines as "FREE". A new genre of gaming that stands for "Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment. It included sculptures of the main characters and preproduction art of Shenhua and various other characters in the world of Shenmue

Whats Shenmue
Around June 1999, a few months before the release of Shenmue in Japan, Sega gave out this demo for the game. The disc includes a mini-game in which Ryo is searching for SEGA executive Yukawa-san. There is a QTE demo in the game as well, involving two thugs who run into Ryo. You can only play in Dobuita, as various people stand blocking your way (there is a picture of one below) to other areas. The demo also features high-quality renders of characters explaining various points of the game, which can also be found in the Shenmue Passport.

The Dragon And Phoenix Mirrors

With the death of the Saturn, Shenmue was moved onto the Dreamcast and would at long last go on sale in 1999 in japan...while the rest have to wait for the game to be dubbed..but for people like me, it was well worth the wait!

"The year is 1986,the place is Yokosuka, Japan. The normally tranquil day-to-day life of Ryo Hazuki is suddenly and irrecoverably shattered by uninvited visitors. A man wearing dark green Chinese clothes appears at the Hazuki family home with two black-suited thugs. This man uses a powerful style of martial arts, the likes of which Ryo has never before seen, to engage his father Iwao in fierce battle. Ryo attempts to intervene and help his father, but the obvious disparity in power is too much. Ryo is beaten down and taken hostage as the man questions Iwao, "Where is the mirror" Having no other recourse, Iwao reluctantly tells him. Once this mysterious object is in the man's possession, he again attacks Iwao. "Do you remember Zhao Sun Ming..." From these words Ryo learns of a shocking truth from the past. His father was responsible for killing someone long ago. And then, Iwao is knocked down in defeat. Ryo pulls his father close and feels him take his last breath. Lan Di the man with the ominous embroidery of a glittering dragon on his back, the responsible. What of the stolen mirror? Who is this Lan Di? Vowing to seek revenge, Ryo embarks on a journey to unravel the mystery surrounding his father's death and deliver justice to the man responsible....

The game arrived on 3 disks and for me was well worth the wait.
I was taken in as soon as the intro started with Lan Dis cold eyes and his ass kicking i new i was gonna love this game. It is still to this day the greatest game ive ever played.
Disk 4 was shenmue passport which allowed you to listen to music, watch cut scenes or sign up to shenmue online and post your arcade scores online[ i was ranked 42 in the world on the QTE arcade game]
This has now been closed down but you can still watch vids and listen to music.

In Japan Shenmue was a big success, infact Sega released Shenmue US in japan as well as Shenmue The Movie.

Which used cut scenes from the game and the English voices because Yu Suzuki was such a big fan of them.

Not long after gamers found out that Shenmue 2 was coming out...it would end up being one of the last games on Dreamcast and would not be released in the US, It became the biggest selling import title of all time.
Due to the Death of the Dreamcast It was a rush release in Europe with Subtitles instead of English voice overs, it showed that this is how shenmue should have been played all along and was on 4 disk being a lot bigger and longer than Shenmue 1.
Gamers were soon to find out that MS had bought the publishing rights and that shenmues new home would be the Xbox.
It would also have English voices, improved graphics, surround sound and would have a free copy of Shenmue The Movie for gamers who had not played it before.

Main Charcters

In Shenmue 2 we first got a glimpse of Shenmue when it was being made on Sega Saturn. It was long rumored that a Virtua fighter rpg was being developed so it must of originated from this Saturn Version. Even Shin Ishikawa mentioned 2 years was spent working on the Saturn version of Shenmue. Looking at the video clip now its no wonder that so much of the game was finished in those 2 years. But in the end the demise of Saturn worldwide made Am2/Sega move the project over to its last console.......Sega Dreamcast.

Shenmue 2 sold well on DC[most imported game ever in the US], the XBox version was never released in Japan for some reason.Infact due to massive demand it was re-released on DC.

Yu Suzuki said a few years back..
I wouldn't feel complete if Shenmue ended with the second game. The voices of our fans are constantly being sent to us, as well. I'm currently scheming to start up some kind of action with the series

Shenmue Online is a MMO action RPG in which tens of thousands of players from across the globe participate in the virtual world of Yu Suzuki's Shenmue, staged in China in the 1980s. Players can explore the vast, realistic world and use their kung-fu martial arts and weapon techniques in realtime fighting action. Sega and JC Entertainment are jointly handling the game development and online gameplay management, with Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki supervising the persistent online game experience.

This story was translated from Korean into English, I'll have tried to make sense of it best I can.

That to China from example 12 things hyel (Yong) with it was connected there is a pulse (Yong pulse), electrolysis it dropped and it came.

Coming from the heavens, a pulse, a dragon.

The pulse originates with what kind of reason, that pulse is active and when and against Ji where the what kind of result will happen being decided with established theory but the most will confront to the danger of pulse and probably, and controls a pulse an effort with the direction which and it tilted it came.

About controlling this 'pulse'

The method which closes the strength of pulse (Yong) the and Chinese phoenix () 9 things which with the mirror of couple of the are in the Chinese various places hyel is to close.

This goes on about the pheonix, also 9 things, remember in S II when Zhu put the mirror above a flame, we saw little lights, probably 9 of them.

This part is hard, something about wicked people and a sealing of something. Most likely to do with the dragon, mirrors etc.

This part goes on about the sealing coming loose, it also says this happened in 1985, near round the time of Shenmue? It also goes onto talk about the people that dissovled the seal, it is an elder brother from a black Chinese society.

From the sounds of this the guy goes onto to build a headquarters. Chi You Men?

Shenmue Online resembles the Offline Shenmue games quite closely. Taking place initially in Hong Kong, with plans in plae to take the story into China and eventually Korea and Japan, the game is meant to provide a realistic digital representation of Asia. Like the offline games, Shenmue Online features lots of mini games, including a casino and an arcade with playable games like Afterburner, Space Harrier and Outrun.

Players fight and move using combinations of the mouse and keyboard. To perform a combo attack, you simply tap the left button on the mouse repeatedly. Most characters can perform basic three hit combos, although the maximum number of hits rises as your character gains experience. You can guard against incoming attack by pressing the mouse's right button. To use special attacks, including magic, you make use of shortcut keys. The keyboard is also used for executing side step moves, although this results in a drop in your character's stamina.

Yu Suzuki recently announced that the game will be out early 2006

Shenmue 3 Ready for Next-Gen

Amazing revelations as Sega's mythical sequel prepares for reality on next-gen platforms. It's nothing to do with the newly announced Ryu ga Goto Ku from Toshihiro Nagoshi. It's AM2 - and it's back, with Shenmue 3.

For years, fans of one of Sega's most celebrated series, Shenmue, have waited and prayed for news of a sequel - a third instalment that would supposedly conclude the epic story, avenging the death of Ryo's father with the demise of arch villain Lan Di. Today, Kikizo has good news for them - Shenmue 3 DOES exist, and IS planned for release.

Under conditions of strict anonymity, sources close to the development of Shenmue 3 revealed to Kikizo that the project has essentially been close to finished and 'ready' for some time - but in hibernation, pending a deal for the entire series on at least one next-gen console. Kikizo's source is authentic and reliable.

And it may come as a surprise that Yu Suzuki, father of Shenmue and perhaps Sega's most famed game creator, has had very little involvement with the project, bar the original story, which remains in tact. Those are the facts - now let's take a look at everything in more detail.

Most devoted followers of the Shenmue series will remember that the first Shenmue, released on Sega's Dreamcast console in Japan at the turn of the millennium, contained the first "chapter" of Yu Suzuki's opus, while sequel Shenmue 2, first released on Dreamcast and later ported to Xbox, contained chapters 3-6. The second chapter supposedly consisted of Ryo's boat journey to Hong Kong, and was unceremoniously skipped.

AM2 had previously gone on record in 2003 to say that the remaining chapters 7-16 chapters would be included in a current-generation Shenmue 3 - but we can reveal that last year, that ceased to be the plan. Our source confirmed that there was very nearly an announcement for an Xbox Shenmue 3 at last year's E3 show in May - which makes sense considering AM2's Shin Ishikawa (who was in charge of Xbox Shenmue 2) had promised at the start of 2003 more Shenmue for Xbox, back when it seemed the system's popularity could still come back in Japan. But, because of poor sales of Xbox Shenmue 2, the deal behind that announcement with Microsoft fell through, and for a while, Shenmue 3 was indefinitely shelved.

Since then, the new plan for Shenmue has been to include the whole series - chapters 1-16 - on at least one next-generation console, although whether or not that would be in one standalone game is not yet clear, and therefore neither is the title "Shenmue 3", ultimately. However, what is certain is that the game, or games, are theoretically complete and ready to be ported to Xbox 360, PS3 or Revolution, depending on a deal with one of the hardware manufacturers - although it could just as easily end up as a multiformat next-gen release. Our source explained, "it will depend on a hardware manufacturer deal - if they get a profitable deal it will be exclusive to one format, but, if it makes more sense, it might be worthwhile [to release] on multi platform. The options are still open."

But why "all chapters"? Why go over what we already know from Shenmue 1 and 2? Says the source, "it is considered that many players will not have played the first two games, so this would be a complete product." We'll admit to being a little confused about how that's going to work. But nonetheless, that appears to be the current plan.

Yu Suzuki has very little involvement in the Shenmue 3 project, and that's something that may come as a surprise to many Sega followers. What we learned in relation to Suzuki-san is pretty interesting, but all that could be confirmed was that, "since Suzuki left AM2, he is off the core Shenmue series, which remained at AM2" - and despite the fact that Shenmue.com is still linked from the website of Suzuki's would-be Sega studio, Digital Rex, it seems all that is now irrelevant and, presumably, simply out of date. Our source clarified, "the series is under the AM2 portfolio. Shenmue remains at AM2 while [Suzuki] pursues other things."

Interestingly, more insight into the "Suzuki era" of the Shenmue series became apparent in a Kikizo interview conducted with Yuzo Koshiro last week. Yuzo Koshiro is a god-like videogame music producer, with as much respect for his work at Sega as any other development executive at the company, having worked on the legendary beats in titles such as the Streets of Rage series, Revenge of Shinobi and of course, Shenmue. In the exclusive interview to be published very soon, Koshiro-san told us, "we had a meeting once a week, just about the music, and [Suzuki] said, 'this scene needs this kind of music and that scene needs that kind of music' - it was difficult; he was very strict, he judged everything and ruled on everything." We should point out that Koshiro-san is most certainly not the source of the rest of this report however!

So who exactly is working on Shenmue 3? Frustratingly, we have learned answers in that regard, but can't name names. We know that Hiroshi Kataoka, the highly respected development talent and president of AM2 since Suzuki-san left, is not involved in any hands-on way with Shenmue 3, and is currently concentrating on the arcade side of output on titles like Virtua Fighter 5. There are however some key, familiar AM2 faces looking after Shenmue 3, including some relatively new talent from within the studio - but unfortunately we can't be more specific, to protect the sources of this report. Knowing a bit about the backgrounds of some of the key staff however, we'll say we're both relieved and, well, intrigued. Meanwhile, a final producer has yet to be internally named, but AM2 Development Director Makoto Osaki seems a likely candidate..

Likely candidate" for producer? Didn't we already say that Shenmue 3 is near-complete? What precisely is the status of development completion? First our source confirms what most fans already knew, "the story is entirely done", (we're pretty sure the story had been finished since before the release of Shenmue 2) before elaborating, "the texture and modelling work is ready, they know what their characters look like and there's hundreds of gigabytes of [uncompressed] textures. Game designs are done. There is no more research to be done. It's a matter of 'porting' to whatever [console]."

As we touched on earlier, a final platform, or platforms, for Shenmue 3 are yet to be finalised. Indeed, we weren't able to clarify whether the exclusivity discussions with the firstparties have actually started yet. But from a purely speculative point of view, it seems most likely to us that Xbox 360 will be the initial host for the future of Shenmue; Microsoft has been absolutely determined to sign up exclusive Japanese-developed content for its new console, yet Sega signings are largely conspicuous by absence.

If Microsoft recognises and accepts that an all-new, sequel-based Shenmue consisting of original content could, quite inevitably, perform better than a rehashed Shenmue 2, then combined with the imminency of the platform, and the global appeal of the franchise (as opposed to certain other Japanese signings which focus on the local market), it's surely a question of when, not if, Shenmue 3 turns up exclusively on Xbox 360. Of course, console exclusivity these days can mean for a period as brief as six months, so when PS3 is released next year maybe it will also see its share of Shenmue; it certainly makes sense for the title to reach as broad an audience as possible.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. All that has yet to be determined. But what is "extremely unlikely", according to the source, is that the project could surface on current-gen consoles: "it would be too much work", cites the source. Interestingly, the source explained that it is cheaper to finalise production for next-gen machines than for current-gen, because of the nature of development work that is already complete. "It would be a struggle to get everything in [on current-gen]." It seems to make sense. Our source offered, "360 looks most likely, but we shall see what the future brings

It's probably worth re-clarifying that Shenmue 3 has nothing to do with Ryu ga Goto Ku, announced earlier today by much-loved Sega development guru Toshihiro Nagoshi. The game looks and feels similar to Shenmue in many respects, and looks absolutely incredible for a PS2 title (for the record, you can learn loads more about it in our upcoming first-hand impressions). And just to be sure, it should also be made clear that the Shenmue 3 project is, and always has been, absolutely separate from the recently canned PC project, Shenmue Online.

While the bloated, initial costs of Shenmue were offset by former Sega President Isao Okawa and parent company CSK, the project now seems to exist as a more manageable, practical and affordable entity, for which most of the background work has always been complete since the original games. And while the future of many previously unprofitable Sega franchises remains uncertain, Shenmue - the title most frequently associated with big Sega losses - is getting another chance.

Unfortunately, we can't elaborate on the sources of this information, to protect certain people close to the project. And let's face it, if their jobs were risked, we could end up back at square one in the seemingly endless drama that is Shenmue 3. Nobody can say for sure that Shenmue 3 will 100% definitely see the light of day, but Kikizo can guarantee the integrity of the source; this is the current status of Shenmue 3, plain and simple. Which means it's likely you'll be seeing off Lan Di once and for all sometime soon. Now, we just have to hope it doesn't turn out to be disappointing. After all, the rest of the RPG genre has done quite a lot of innovating in the last five years.

Of course, the official Sega line on Shenmue 3 is "no comment". But when this story is dissected all over the web and quite possibly ruled "bogus" from certain quarters, all that means is that the official Sega line is "no comment". If you push Sega a little harder, it will possibly even make official noises about how it all seems "unlikely" - but nonetheless, this is factual information.

With titles like Virtua Fighter 5, Afterburner III and now Shenmue 3 to look forward to, it seems difficult to remember why we were all so worried after last year's Sammy takeover. And from what we hear, there's more to look forward to just on the horizon.

Yes this is the best news ever!
What to expect in Part III??

First, we will take a look at the image from Shenmue.com on the far left, the image shows Lan Di with three other mystery characters. What is behind the four characters looks to be the Chiyoumen symbol, you see this clearly as a tattoo on Lan Di in the first game. We can assume these three other characters are leaders in the organization much like Lan Di, each leader representing one of the four heavenly beasts. They could have roles in Shenmue 3 or possibly later in the series. The second image is the Shenmue story designer Kasahara with what is blurred out images of six Shenmue 3 characters, it was this same image that shown during the Nov, 2001 announcement. On the far right is a photo from the Shenmue: The Movie exhibition in Japan, it shows character designs we might see down the line. Here is a character tree translated by Kiyuu asking further questions on new characters.

Niao Sun/ Chonghua/TyoJun

This female character who is called by several names was seen in alot of promotional material even before the first game came out, like in Whats Shenmue you can find a partial skin of her model (through modification). There are many clues that point her presence in Shenmue 3, first is the teaser pic in the end of Shenmue 2 in both the DC and Xbox versions. Second, we see her figure only halfway shadowed out of the four Chiyoumen leaders, this is some sort of hint to who we will see next. Third factor is when they offered a mobile phone icon at the official site, it said she was a character in the series from the third game onwards. Some in-game screens can be found of her as well as the comic image with Ziming

the following decription was made of her:

"One of "the Four Leaders" of Chiyou Men, in charge of the south. She wears voluptuous red dress, and her manner seduces people. Her fearful eyes that pierce everything are always seekingchases. She takes pleasure in cruel actions and eliminates people just like bugs"

Ziming Hong
Ziming Hong is the brother to Xuiying Hong who left her at an early age to seek the Chiyoumen. He left with intentions much like Lan Di had with Iwao, to avenge the death of his parents. Before Ziming had departed to the Chiyoumen, he left Xuiying the white (yin) portion of a pendant while Ziming kept the black (yang) half. Xuiying later gave Ryo her white portion of the pendant before he went to Guilin. Add this fact to the side story comic of Xuiying and Ziming then you have possibility of Ziming in Shenmue 3. Niao-Shun also makes an appearance in this comic, this further solidifies her presence. Remember the Chiyoumen picfrom earlier? Take a look at this and see if you can notice a resemblance.

Whos This?

We pretty much know for fact Ryo will end up going to Bailu village in Shenmue 3, but is there other locations? Our staff member LanDC did some research with his modified Xbox and found loading screens hidden away in Shenmue 2x. The loading screens were of two, Miao village and Miao Guang Temple. The Miao are a people near Guilin China with a long history, it's this history that ties in with Shenmue.

Shenhua's stepfather's name is Zhongshou Yuan. Although we cannot be 100% certain that this'll turn out to be the final name, it comes from a reliable source.

The Chi You Monster

In Chinese and Korean mythology, Chi You is a war deity. For Hmongs, Chi You is a sagacious mythical king. Some Koreans see Chi You as a mythical emperor of ancient Korea, mythology of which is either traditional or formed in 20th century.

Chi You is also sometimes kown as Qi Yu, the god of rain, and a descendant of Shen Nong, the inventor of agriculture. His appearance is half giant, half bull, with the front of his head covered with (or made of) iron.

Along with Yan Di and Huang Di, Chi You is a deity in Hmong mythology, Chi You was the mythical leader of the Hmongs, king of Jiuli, and once a follower of Yan Di. When Huang Di subdued Yan Di, Chi You was weary of the suppression and conspired with Yan Liang, another deity. Soon, Hmong and Han clashed in the battle of Zhuolu.

According to Chinese mythological book Shan Hai Jing, Chi You, with Giants, Guryeo (Hmong) people and evil spirits, rebelled against Huang Di at Zhuolu plains. Both sides used magical powers, but Chi You had the advantage because his troops were armed with forged swords and halberds. Using his power (perhaps a mythological explanation of meteorology used in warfare), Chi You covered the battle field in thick fog. Only with the help of a magical compass chariot (South Pointing Chariot) could Huang Di's troops could find their way through the mist. He also used his daughter Nü Ba, the Goddess of Drought, to harm Chi You's troops. Later on, Chi You suffered more defeats and was captured. Only Ying Long, the winged dragon, being a brave servant of Huang Di, dared to slay him. Chi You's chains were transformed into acorn trees, while Ying Long was cursed to remain on earth forever.

According to Chinese legend, the people under Chiyou (蚩尤 Chīyoú) was defeated at Zhuolu (涿鹿 Zhuōlù, a defunct prefecture on the border of today provinces of Hebei and Liaoning) by the military unification of Huang Di (黃帝 Huángdì) and Yandi, leaders of the Huaxia (華夏 Huáxià) tribe as they struggled for supremacy of the Huang He valley. The compass was believed to be the crucial reason of Huaxia's victory. The battle, believed to be taken place in the 26th century B.C, was fought under heavy fog as Huaxia was able to match against Miao with the compass. After the loss, the original tribe split into two smaller splinter tribes, the Miao and the Li (黎 lí). Miao continuously moving southwest and Li southeast as the Huaxia race, now known as Han Chinese race, expanding southwards. During the course of Chinese history, they were regarded as "barbarians" by the increasingly technologically and culturally advanced Han Chinese. Some fragments of the races were assimilated into the Chinese during Zhou Dynasty.

Yet, in other versions, the people of Jiuli fragmented in 3 different directions. It is said Chiyou had 3 sons, and after the fall of Jiuli, his oldest son led some people south, his middle son led some people north, and his youngest son remained in Zhuolu and assimilated into the Huaxia culture. Those who were led to the south established the San-Miao nation. Perhaps due to this splitting into multiple groups, many Far Eastern people regard Chiyou as their ancestors, and by the same token, many question the ethnicity of Chiyou as exclusively Hmong or otherwise. In some cirlces of thought, the Koreans also regard Chiyou as an ethnic ancestor. Furthermore, under China's ethnic unification policy, Chiyou is now also regarded as one of China's forefathers alongside the ethnic Han ancestors, Huangdi and Yandi.

Other mythology states that Chi You had 81 brothers, and was a grotesque looking creature: he had six arms, four eyes, the head and hooves resembled an ox and his head was made of metal (copper and iron, mentioned 銅頭鐵額). He only ate stones and pebbles; therefore his teeth were almost unbreakable. One of his achievements was the first use of metal weapons in warfare. He is said to have forged the first swords from bronze or copper. He was violent and no one could defeat him.

LanDC's Invisible Ryo and loading Skip Glitch from Shenmue II

What you'll need to do is position Ryo close to a shop sign or any sign that can be locked onto. Then, as someone you can talk with comes near and the mouth icon appears over the A button icon, quickly try to lock-on to the sign and press the A button simultaneously. When you do, the game will think you're trying to do both tasks at once. You'll notice how Ryo says the shop name while speaking to the character. Once you've finished the conversation with the character, you'll return to the game, but with no Ryo in sight, as his model is still gone from thinking you're locked onto the sign. This means you can't open your notebook, inventory window or anything like that. Pressing the B button will close out the "locked on" item and send Ryo's model back to normal play.

Other than just being interesting to walk around invisibly, you can also bypass loading areas in this state. As you can see in my video below, I try walking into the Former Barracks, but instead of loading, I just keep walking. In doing this, you can walk back far enough to enter forbidden areas, or better known as "walk through walls." The only bad thing about this, though, is Shenmue II's gameplay system won't allow free walking in forbidden areas like Shenmue I's does, meaning you'll be running in-place after a while. If you want to walk around off-map or something like that, the only way to force Ryo to keep pressing forward is to rapidly press the UP button on the D-pad. He will slowly but surely inch further and further out.
