Metal Gear Solid, some say the best stealth game of all time has alot of history behind it that people do not realise.
Hideo Kojima (The creator of the series) originally came up with the idea for these games after playing hide an seek with his son, which brings me to the debut of Metal Gear on gaming platforms.
Metal Gear, this appeared on the MSX on the 7th of July 1987.
This game was based upon a secret agent named David, codenamed 'Solid Snake'.
The game was based in a place named 'Outer Heaven' which housed a giant mech usually called 'Metal Gear', Snake would have to infiltrate the base and stop Metal Gear and Big Boss.
This game also featured veteran character Frank Jaegar aka Gray Fox.
Still on the subject, 1988 Metal Gear appeared on the NES.
In 1990 Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake was released and a version of Metal Gear for the Commodore 64.
Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake showed another mission taken place by Solid Snake but this time in Zanzibar Land.
Alot of secrets were revealed in this game which leads to alot of answers later in the epic series.
If you want to know though, I recommend getting them on an emulator because I am trying not the spoil the great story here
After about 8 years passed, fans saw the return of the Metal Gear franchise, this time with 'Metal Gear Solid' which first appeared in 1998 on Sony's Playstation.
The game was based far into the future from the original 80s titles but again followed the story of Solid Snake as he infiltrated a base on 'Shadow Moses' island.
The story followed on with a few things from previous games and included characters like Big Boss and Frank Jaegar.
1999 saw the release of Metal Gear Solid : Integral and Metal Gear Solid : VR Mission, which was practically the same game except for names.
Adding to these was also Metal Gear Solid : Special Missions which again was the same game with a different name.
Integral was an expansion pack which offered hundreds more VR missions and bonus missions, it was one step to leading up to what would be one of the greatest sequals ever, but I will get onto that in a minute.
Around this time Metal Gear Solid's fan base was rising and rising, new fans were drawn to the series with the release of the Playstation masterpiece.
In the year 2000, the turn of the millenium 2 Metal Gear Solid titles were released, the first being a conversion of the 1998 Metal Gear Solid on the PC.
The second being a version of Metal Gear Solid for the Gameboy Colour.
This was ranked as the best espionage title for the GBC and featured Solid Snake in the lead role again, this time with a slightly different story and some cool new bosses.
Some of the controls were a bit hard to get used to on this title but it was a GBC title with a difference in the end and was one hell of a game.
2001 had a version of Metal Gear Solid for the Dreamcast, known as bleem! Metal Gear Solid.
But this was really just pushed aside as 2001 marked the release for Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty for Sony's Playstation 2.
Metal Gear Solid 2 saw Solid Snake invading a tanker in order to get photographic proof of the new Metal Gear, 'Ray'.
Things soon turn upside down and the rest of the game sees you in control of a new agent named Jack aka Raiden.
Fans weren't to pleased with the change but the game still remained very popular none the less.
The next gen graphics helped a great deal in this, with great details and motion capture that really put alot of other PS2 games to shame.
Though slightly criticised, Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty is still rated as one of the best games of that time and is still selling thousands and thousands to this day.
2002-2003 gave something Metal Gear fans wanted.
The release of Metal Gear Solid 2 : Substance, a version of Metal Gear Solid 2 with added VR missions, hundreds of them and a chance to play alot more of Solid Snake.
This game appeared on Microsoft's XBOX console first and PC and appeared of the PS2 later.
2004 was a big year for Metal Gear Solid and marked 4 new releases, the least of the 4 being Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake for Mobile telephones.
The first to arrive was Metal Gear Solid : The Twin Snakes which was a classic remake of the original 1998 Metal Gear Solid using the Metal Gear Solid 2 graphics engine and gameplay, original voice actors were also recalled to do the job over and did a great job at it.
This game appeared on Nintendos GameCube.
Later that year saw the arrival of Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater, a prequal based before Metal Gear set in the 60s during the Cold War.
Players took control of Jack aka Naked Snake who would later be known as 'Big Boss'.
This game saw slight improvements in graphics and was based in the jungle where Snake would have to eat whatever he could find to survive.
This year saw the release of Metal Gear Ac!d, a version of Metal Gear for Sony's Playstation Portable which takes a different shape and has Snake using cards to play the game and adding that much more strategy.
2005 will also see the release of 2 more Metal Gear Solid games, the first being Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence, this will be an add on for Metal Gear Solid 3 which gives it that much extra depth.
Also setting a new trend for Metal Gear Solid games by going online.
This game will also include Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake in the package.
The last release of 2005 looks to be Metal Gear Ac!d which will again be on Sony's Playstation Portable and follow Snake with his cards.
Last but not least, release unconfirmed...
Metal Gear Solid 4 is in the works which will follow on to Metal Gear Solid 2.
Little is known about this game but it will appear on Sony's Playstation 3.
I really do recommend this series to anyone who hasn't played, the story(s) are sheer class and the whole series is just a masterpiece.
Metal Gear Solid is my favourite game and always will be, although the series may be coming to an end soon, I will stay loyal and always respect this masterpiece.
Thanks for reading.
