Been looking at some of the new games about to come into beta stages, reading up on their mechanics and class / skill sets. As expected, the classes are mostly similar with a few novel ideas flung in.
My question is, do you always go for the same sort of class? Or do you try a new class every game? Or do you just make them all every time and try them all out? Also what class do you usually like to try? Always a healer, or prefer getting in the thick of it?
And Why? Do you pick something you know you're good at, or do you like to experiment with something different?
I tend to switch around a bit, but generally unless a game has a revolutionarly good or bad interface then ill enjoy the same types of classes.
I prefer tanking type high defense classes, they have that protecting people element a healer has, while being able to survive several mobs. That said theyre almost always a pain in the arse to level and very limited in pvp, so i tend to pick melee dps classes when trying out a new game, or a class thats unique enough ive not seen before.
I dont like hybrids in the sense of classes who dont get locked to one specific role. Im happy for them to exist, but if a class can do several roles, it shouldnt be able to do them aswell as a *pure* class...
Ive just rerolled a Druid in WoW and it feels like a total pisstake - I went to a noob instance as dps with shadow priest healing, prot pala tanking. First off i have a decent buff for the entire party (motw) and thorns really helps a prot pala hold agro, so far no problem. So im there in catform doing okay dps, healer dies because the pala is pulling like a tard and mobs are running, i switch out of catform, full mana bar which turns out heals better than the s-priest, combat res while keeping people alive easily. Then the pala does the usual omfg gtg and ninjalogs, so i become the tank. I know later it gets more gear dependant in each role, but Blizz have always seemed to like druids a lot.
So yeah, usually barbarian, rogue, wizard, warrior type classes.
Yeah I had a 66 druid, managed to play all 3 trees in the course of levelling up due to doing levelling in a group, it was one of my favourites tbh, although generally I don't really like hybrid classes either.
I generally go for healers / ranged classes. I've never really been a fan of melee combat, and getting in the thick of it, although tanking is a bit different, because you're in control of the whole situation basically.
I think that's why I like healers, they're pretty much needed by anyone, and in the worst case can usually get out alive, even if it involves shielding and healing up and running away like a fanny
My main class in wow though was a mage, mainly because in beta I saw how cool all their spells looked and the promise of invisibility was tempting (although it never really worked out how I expected ) It turned me really competitive though, always had to be topping damage meters and getting nuts gear.
I'm tempted with new games to try something different, but keep being drawn back to healing classes. And if I try to be adventurous I'll end up being a sorcerer or an enchanter and end up doing the same thing I did in WoW for years :/ argh!
When I first start a game, I always go for the warrior/barbarian/fighter type class as character 1, it's the easiest and helps you get used to the game better.
Once i've played a bit and know what i'm doing, then I play around with other classes and characters, it stops things getting stale.
I tend to avoid reading the millions of guides and articles about every game though, I like learning things for myself, it's part of the fun.
Even if I was seriously loaded, I could never ever buy a character ready done for any game, it would completely defeat the entire purpose of the game for me, thus making it a complete waste of time and no fun at all.
Saying all that, personally I now stay well clear of mmorpgs, I find very little in any of them to make me want to spend large chunks of my life competing with thousands of other people just to try and get a better axe than them or a nicer spell, or my level number higher than theirs. I really can't be arsed, just the same as I can't be arsed, joining a game and having to be friendly to people otherwise the game is unplayable, aka joining a guild because many bits of many games are impossible without grouping and guild hunt type things. I like to pick a game up, play for as long as I want, do what I want, enjoy a bit of story and then put it down again when i've had enough, you generally can't do that with most of these modern mmorpgs. It always goes back to Mir, but at least in Mir, you could just bimble into spider valley or your favourite haunt, twat a few spiders or whatever, then log back off, without ever having to speak to anyone else most the time and without it being essential to be in a group.
Melee every time, I just hate 'cowardly' ranged players.
You only say that because we kick your ass one-on-one
Det I'm the opposite. If a game is downloading I spend all my time reading all the guides, and writing down little notes like keyboard shortcuts or levels I can get spells. I hate having to go back on myself and spending ages when you start up just trying to figure out how to train a skill or read your quests. I find it incredibly frustrating and usually just end up quitting it and uninstalling it, blaming it on a lousy interface
However, I'd never buy a character or anything like that, my characters are extremely personal, so it's pointless buying one. You don't get the same sense of achievement or anything.
I used to always go for heavy plate wearing melee types every time. Ranged classes just weren't for me but the lack of pvp viability and always having to be a tank put me off it in MMO's since WoW.
Now I tend to go for melee DPS like rogues or champs in LOTRO and I'm more open minded when it comes to class choice. It depends very much what mood I'm in as to how I want to play.
I'm currently levelling a warlock in WoW and I'm loving it.
In my next MMO (Warhammer) the temptation is to jump straight in with a melee DPS but I don't plan to put all my energies in to one class from the off this time but to try a whole range and find which fits best. I might even surprise myself and be a healer but that's a long shot.
