Peter Pan will be performed in a specially designed 1,100-seat tent in Kensington Gardens – from June 10 (previews from May 26) to August 30, 2009.
A mischievous boy who can fly and refuses to grow up, Peter lives on the small island of Neverland, where he is leader of the Lost Boys. He does, however, occasionally venture into the outside world and there meets Wendy and her brothers, Michael and John. Together the four set off to Neverland and an adventure that includes pirates, fairies, Indians, mermaids and even a crocodile.
Kensington Gardens has special significance for
Peter Pan, for it was here that JM Barrie first met the Llewelyn Davies family, the inspiration for his timeless children’s classic.
The new production will be directed by former Almeida Theatre Associate Director Ben Harrison, who specialises in producing site specific theatre. His previous work (with Scottish theatre company Grid Iron) includes
Night Flight (in an aircraft hangar) and
Ghost Ward (in an East End hospital).
Peter Pan is adapted by Tanya Ronder, whose previous adaptations include
Vernon God Little (Young Vic) and Blood Wedding (Almeida Theatre), and designed by William Dudley, who will create a 360 degree projected set using CGI technology.
The rainproof tent, complete with bar and restaurant, will be situated in the meadow between West Carriage Drive and the Long Water in the north-eastern part of Kensington Gardens (near Lancaster Gate Tube station).
