i get to hill junction
break, clutch down
handbreak on, break off
shift into 1st
gas a little
clutch at biting point
handbreak off
abit of gas
release clutch slowly
and thats where i lose it. usually it does one of two things;
- stalls
- judders like crazy, almost stalls, then i put alot of gas on and lift off the clutch completely and it goes.
it tends to be 50/50 what happens, but nobody is telling me where im going wrong... not enough gas? not enough clutch? taking off clutch too fast? taking it off too slow?
any ideas? and please, if you have any ideas, try to explain them in a fashion where someone who has only had about 5 lessons can understand
im fine with everything else... gears, roundabouts, traffic lights, setting off, breaking safety .etc but setting off on a hill is my cryptonite atm
Hard to explain. Just comes with practice really and getting the right amount of clutch and gas. Need to be gentle and if you feel the car start to judder the clutch is too high with too little gas so give it a little more gas but only gentley or you will fly off. You can also put the clutch back down a tad if it judders but then you might start rolling back lol.
like what everyone else says, ease slowly up on the clutch and down gently on the gas, clutch control.
i have a nasty hill to drive up and i dread it each tim, but with practice every day i hate it less and less.
I've only been on the road 5 mins, and it's still daunting to me, lots of practice, and who cares if u get it wrong, deep breath and get it right next time good luck
Hill starts, imo, are the hardest thing. my test is in two days and I've only got properly used to them now. You'e really jsut gotta take it slow. Get your rev counter between about 10 and 20 (15ish) bring the clutch up to the bite point and then jsut kinda sit for half a second or more and make sure it feels right, make sure if feels as if you'll go, but also that you've still got your clutch far enough down. Also talk to your instructor about it. In reality, eneryone says it's gas or clutch, but what it really is, is just getting the handbreak off at the right time. Or so my instructor tells me, and I can do it now

Automatic would be the simple solution that way hill starts become just a sinch, they are easy in a manual but still, automatic convenience is the best and plus you can do two things at once in an auto, for example you could do a hill start whilst doing a drive-by on xbox 360 fanboys. No doubt one of thems last words will be "oh my god, its just like saints row"
