I'm wanting a reference from my current employer, I've asked both the senior manager and the managing director but both have said if I write it they will sign it. Can they really ask me to do this? I need a reference for my uni application and since I'm not longer at school it has to be from my current employer.
Its really hard to write a reference for myself, even worse is the fact they would be able to read a page about me blowing my own trumpet and show it to anyone else in the office they want to. I think they wont write me a reference because if they do and I leave for uni they will be quite stuck (their not very good with computers and I do a lot of computer work for them, ranging from finance, advertising, general documents, sales etc).
Is their anything I can do? I will I have to try and sit and write a reference myself which is hard to do for someone else let alone myself.
If they are saying write your own, what you wanna do, is write two different ones up.
One which will get you into Uni but is modest and one which is a complete mick take. Get the proper one signed by one of them, then go to the other with the mick take one.
At the end of the day, you need the reference for Uni right? In that case, basically do what ever you need to, to make sure you get it off them.
That's a bit gay. The whole point in a reference is that it's someone else's opinion of you. They are just being lazy. For uni, you are allowed to get references off of teachers as well. If you weren't a pain in the arse at school, go to your favourite teacher and get them to write it for you. That's what I did and I got a glowing reference

I would but having been left school for quite a few years and me working all day I don't have time to go back to my local school/college to get a reference
I've spent a while doing this but not the best at writing letters so thought I would post it here and get a few opinions before I show it to my employer tomorrow!

Dear University admissions department,
This reference letter is provided at the written request of Sacred, who has asked me to serve as a reference on his behalf. Sacred has been in my employment for the past eighteen months. Sacred was employed by myself for the role of IT & Website Administrator, his duties include the day to day managing of our website, this includes updating our webpage’s, answering customer enquiries and processing electronic orders. He is also responsible for monitoring and with drawing funds from one of our online banking facilities. Sacred has also been responsible for designing, publishing and developing various advertising materials both for ourselves and for our agents.
More recently Sacred has also been responsible for developing a barcode system to deal with our in house stock management. Sacred is a very responsible hard working employee who has always given one hundred and ten percent. I am more than happy to refer him to your university and you shall not be disappointed if you choose to accept him. We all enjoy working with Sacred and we will be sad to see him leave but happy that he is pursuing his ambitions in life.
If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
As I said I'm not the best at writing letters (although they get me to do it at work all the time ) so go easy on me!
I dont see the problem here, i've had to do this several times, its because the employer's are too lazy to write thier own thats all. Atleast you can't get a bad referance right? (btw you can always go to your old school still and ask them, its not like they will kick you out).
