I know its healthy to have a competative market but taking some of the football rights away from sky in the first place was just greed on the part of the premier league owners, it certainly didnt help the real footie fans who were already paying out for sky it just meant they would have to pay out an extra tenner a month for what they already had with sky and as for england games being on setanta only that just sucks the sweat of a dead baboons balls national team games should be free for everyone to watch and so should the FA cup matches.
Competitions is good, but Setanta was charging premium prices - more than HBO - per month. Contrary to the article, I thought Setanta got a bunch of good games including the top 4 teams. In the US, the DirecTV satellite feed was $15/mo for one Setanta channel! I watch 3-4 games each week on Fox Soccer (mostly Sky feeds), which costs $10/mo for 30 channels of sports from all around the country. They should have priced their package better and attracted loads of viewers, and then considered raising the prices.
How many here get Setanta?
Unfortunately, this is not a good choice for ESPN because the fall and winter are throwball and basketball, both pro and college. Unless they want to start a new channel of ESPN Soccer, which would be good.
We get Sky Sports, HD, Multiroom and maybe movies im not sure. All i use Sky for is the red button on formula 1 for the extra shows/practice shows.
Setanta used to let you sign up for single events a bit like box office, like £10 for a month and youd get a months sports plus the event you wanted, then they switched to 3 or 6 months minimum sub. I used to watch boxing on them, but last time i wanted to watch a match it would have cost like £30 to get the channel.
I think this is a case where demand works against the consumer, forcing the broadcasters to pay over the odds for sports and pass on the price hikes. Im happy to see Setanta go.
ps. this wouldnt be fair without a quick mention that Sky are bastards for putting adverts over the round breaks in box office boxing matches so you cant hear the team chat despite already paying them £15-20 for the match!
Waits patiently for ESPN to get their asses in gear and sort out the deal with Virgin. I aint paying stupid money to Sky to watch the once in a blue moon match they bother to put on for any non top 4 team.
Stupid that it was ever allowed to get to the point where the channel ended up going tits up.
i wasnt sad to see Setanta go, the bandwidth was so thin they could have gotten a better signal by running a component cable to my house!
Hopefully things might change with ESPN but im not counting on it. It'll no doubt end up being exactly the same business model as Setanta so i have no idea how they are going to make it work.
The problem is that while Setanta had a lot of other stuff going on, a lot of people were only interested in the football.

Equally they covered a few good boxing nights and there was no way i was going to sign to setanta for once in a while boxing fights. Initially they used to let you sign up for a month for about 10quid so you could pay a tenner and get the fight and maybe watch some other stuff too.
