Has anyone used any of these big driving schools for lessons, and if so were they any good? Or is it better to get someone local to teach you to drive? I was looking at BSM but they have really mixed reviews and a lot have said they keep you learning for the extra cash rather than putting you in for a test, but they have good deals atm, one that I can afford.
So anyone had any experience of the big companies?
Tbh i changed half way through when i was learning cause i didnt think the first instructor i was with was helping make any progress.
I think it does purely depend on the instructor, if you can find someone you know who can suggest a good one i think that would be best!
I'm going to learn to drive as soon as the nights get a bit lighter. Scared as fuck but can't wait at the same time. Can anyone reccommend anywhere in Sunderland? Det maybe learn to drive here?
From what ive heard its a big lottery of who you get, you can get great people working for smaller firms and total leeches working for big firms or vice versa.
I think the main thing is to make sure that if you feel youre not improving much, then switch instructor/company.
I think Pura has hit the nail on the head, hell aint the ones who work for the big guns effectively franchases?
It's a balancing act for them, they want to keep you hooked, but not annoy you so much that you go elsewhere.
Go for the test when you feel confident enough.
I found it the other way around, the local well known one in Bristol told me at the beginning i was ok to book test, yet with barely a week to go my teacher changed his mind and made up some weird stories of me missing too many lessons (he double booked one)
BSM weren't sure i would be ready within the week, but i asked them to try as i only had a week to go,... I did i passed.
Nah, I learned to drive in Glencoe while I lived up there many many moons ago, in the middle of winter. So basically it was me, my instructor and a traffic free, snow covered road, absolute bliss.
I agree with what some people have said though, in my opinion, you have to connect with the instructor, because not understanding them, or being frightened of them, or simply not having trust in them, means your not going to be performing at your best, so if you get someone you don't like, definately move onto someone else, just don't be so critical of the driving instructor, that you never get time to actually do the learning to drive part.
One of the things I thing helped me personally was to have 2 hour lessons instead of the normal single hour lessons, you get to have more practice simply driving and getting confident behind the wheel and the likes.

Ye i usually had a hour and half or two hours, twice a week, the only problem there it is a lot of money in short period!
I learned to drive 17yrs ago, my instructor was an ex bus driver, and he was a bit of a tyrant, but, i think he did an excellent job.
Not had an accident or nudge or bump yet, (touch wood).
My second decent one used to hit my hand if i was in the wrong gear! lol So funny.
and when he had his laminated map thing out which he marked with the pen, he used to gob up all he could spit on it and then wipe it his hankey was minging but so funny!
