So James came home today having bought a guitar I think all the guitar hero has him thinking he can do it for real lol. Anyway, it rocks, and I want to learn to play it as well.
We found some sites like Free guitar lessons - justinguitar.com and also been watching some youtube videos. Does anyone know any good sites for learning all the chords e.t.c. or any other advice Or if there are any good books worth buying? Or any other advice? Cheers
I got a free haircut yesterday (yay for hair models) so it's lot shorter at the front now than it used to be. But ty for the tip, and the website, Seth.
Been learning D A E chords, which I can just about remember, but switching between them at any sort of speed seems kind of impossible lol

A lot of it is muscle memory and will improve lots quickly.
Rather than holding a chord and strumming randomly, try taking your fingers off and on the same chord. Its a lot easier than changing shape, but itll help loads with being able to perform that chord in a split second if you practice the lifting off and on it.
It depends where you want to go and what you want to learn really, if its more lead or rhythm or whatever. Personally i learnt some chords, then started picking out of them, then i got bored and stopped playing after about a year
Stepson just bought a bass guitar, as mentioned above, off the thrill of Guitar Hero, I suspect He's never had any real musical inclination before but hoping to be Flea Two
The "Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing Bass Guitar" is excellent (not written by me), and you can interact with the author on GN.

Reason: Added footnote.
They have some Beginners lessons and an Easy Song listing in the forums.
Also, if you learn to read the chord boxes, you can read most popular sheet music. It's not too hard.
To be fair, you can find a lot of music in tab form which isn't at all hard to read. I'd have to recommend, though, that you memorise the notes on your fretboard and at least give reading staff notation a go.
Also, if you can, find a friend or someone who can play. Books and the 'net are all well and good for most of what you'll need to learn in order to start playing, but there's some stuff that I've found is better explained in person. Though I suppose there's also videos.
Be careful with internet tabs, because they are not verified, and they don't show timing or proper chord structures. Great for learning leads though.
The few tabs I've used, I usually have to alter to make them playable.
Yeah I've read that so going to steer clear of them for a bit, will probably buy some books of bands I like, I've heard that The Beatles, Oasis and Green Day are all relatively easy so once I get a hang of a few more chords and get better switching between them at speed I'll pick up some books.
My dad and my uncles all used to play guitar, and my friend Ashley plays guitar and bass, but they're all away in Scotland. I'll need to take the guitar up next time we go visiting, pick up some tips and tricks. Hopefully I'll be able to play a song or two by then to impress!

Before it got shut down by some corporate twats from America (no offence intended), I was quite fond of the Power Tab Archive. Most of the guys who submitted tabs were competent players, and everything was in Power Tab format. (Power Tab being a bit like Guitar Pro but free).
All the tabs were reviewed before posting to check that they had all the right staff notation and were complete, and there was community review on all tabs so you could easily see if there were any problems with them. I had to alter a couple of them where I thought they were off, but mostly the tabs were good enough to learn the song 99% and you could figure out the rest for yourself.
I have to admit, though, that a lot of the tab I see on the 'net is utterly shite. So many of them are way off, or some noob has only tabbed one riff that they liked and couldn't be bothered tabbing the rest of it.
As said before dont just strum the same chord repeatedly, go back and forth between chords getting faster and adding more chords. Thats how i started, then you can try power chords and then bar chords. then for your picking learn your scales. and just keep doing them.
Few good songs to learn for beginners...
Wonderwall by oasis (the reason i play guitar!)
Basket case by greenday (power chords)
Time of your life by greedday (switching between picking and chords)
Theres also a few courteeners songs that are pretty simple to play
The 1st song i leart to play was Cigarettes and Alcohol by oasis
Also you if you want you can "aquire" a copy of guitar pro. if you get a decent set of tabs you can mute the lead guitar and play along with the backing
