Polar bears are type of brown bear & would have brown fur is it wasnt for its unusual construction, the fur appears white to tan but is actually transparent. Due to the fact that each strand is hollow, in order to hold heat, it reflects the light back to make them look white. In captivity in warm humid conditions they sometimes go green due to algae growth inside the hollow hairs
