I didnt know the lonely streets of Port Talbot paid that much
Ive always had decent pay, Apart from my first job which was less than Minimum Wage.
Thats because it was in swansea DVLA as a contractor!
Only place that pays decent in PT is the steel works and im not risking my life for any amount of wage!
It is a delayed rise against inflation =/ an increase is a increase though, right?
Slowly getting turned off by Gordon Brown, i nearly didn't entirely dislike him...which in todays age is not bad going for a politician.
I despise the fact that a 16 yr old can come fresh out of school, choose a work path rather than a educational one - move out of home, and can be expect to be paid as little as 3.40 while working the same job as lets say a 22 yr old. I know there are hundreds of arguments as to why it's a good thing the minimum wage is staggered, encouragement into a education path etc, but to many it's not a option which they succeed in; why should they be penalized.
I think at some point the minimum wage will be scrapped,
i've just started a new job last week, and so did a 19 year old, we both do the same job but in different hostels and we get paid the same, when i asked why not the minimum wage (because i believe that the 19 should indeed be paid the same as me) it was mentioned that if they didn't pay the 19 year old the same as me they could be done for ageism, yes the 19 year old could complain, and this is a government department.... so it got me thinking..
how many of you are on the minimum wage and could try the ageism card for a pay rise. (research it first i wouldn't want anyone loosing their job)
although the minimum wage is a good thing in one sense as it protects the youngsters and makes sure they get a proper wage, how many are still being underpaid because of their age?
when we go to work we are treated as equals then we should be paid the same if we are doing the same job, but then you have the pay scales which depending on experience depends on how much you get.
for an example if i was full time in my job it would be £19k - £24k if i was experienced in my job i would expect to be paid about £22k, where as if someone who is new to it all should start at £19k which i see is fine as it gives you an incentive to work for your money to get up the pay scale ladder, where as the 19 year old that i work with, if the minimum wage was and issue here (it isn't but if it was) she would be on £12k - £16k that would be a big difference.
When the minimum wage first came in, I was earning more than what the government stated I should of been earning.
I think I was getting like 80p more an hour, but they couldnt lower the money which was good, it just meant a lot of us mysteriously lost our jobs due to 'financial cuts'. But the following season, they employed loads more people again and paid them the minimum wage instead of the wage we were all on.
meh, companies do that sorta stuff all the time. classic example is tesco, who have a tendancy to fire employees just before their 6 month pay increase, then take them on again a month later.
i'm paid above minimum wage, wonder if it'll go up to reflect this increase...
