Default How to connect to a router to set it's settings?

hey,

I got a router (previously used by other people) and they gave me it.
Now when i want to set up my router. I'm not able to go to it's settings page or anything...

I put the power in, i put a net cable in it... green lights were having a party...
But when i use the default way to get to the settings page... I just get page can not be displayed.
Anyone know a way to find out the routers ip? and/or help me to connect to it so i can change the settings on it?
The thing that stands on the front of the quick installation guide thingie is

Wireless-G Broadband Router
1 WAN + 4 LAN
IEEE 802.11g/b

Now i know again why networking was my worst course when i was still at school >.<

All i need now is just to hear a song I know.

When i got my router and put everything into it, it set itself as 192.168.0.1. Iv always found that with any other routers iv used too.

Theres a DOS command (cant remember it now) that tells you the address and names of machines on your local network, but i dont remember that one.

Just open up a browser and type in 192.168.0.1 and see what happens :]

Looking at specs type 192.168.1.1 (this is the default address for the router) into a browser then at the username/password the default settings are :-

Username:
Password: admin

(p/w is lower case no username)

this should get you into your config pages

Hopefully they didnt change the default un/pw

Heres a link to the user guide (pdf format)

I used the default ip for the router... but nothing happens >.<
When i ping the 192.168.2.1 (default that is in the manual) it says host not reachable (same for 192.168.1.1 )

When I use the command netstat... i don't got any active connection.

When i type in ipconfig I get some kind of IP adress.

Ip adress: 169.254.94.190
subnetmasker: 255.255.0.0

when i type in ipconfig /renew ... i need to wait for a long time and in the end get the can not connect to DHCP server

Try pinging 192.168.2.255 or 192.168.1.255 and see if you get response of any ip adresses. If one responded then it will probably be the router and that ip address you got in ip config is something that windows makes up when it doesn't have any other address i think.

EDIT: Oh yeah don't know if you did this before but when you try to go to the routers default settings page address make sure that your computer is in the same subnet as the router. So if the router is 192.168.2.1 You set the static address 192.168.2.2 on your computer.

the 169.254.x.x address is the default address of the card and is the range all non commuicating cards set themselves to when there is no active connection available.

Are you using a straight cable to connect up the pc or a cross-over cable.
With a router unless it has auto-detection of cable type it will default to using straight cables (white-orange,orange,white-green,blue,white-blue,green,white-brown,brown is the way a straight cable is connected )

try pinging 192.168.0.1 ( this would be the default gateway )

also try pinging 10.0.0.1 as this is a standard ip range setup for internal lan use.

try powering off the unit then powering on with the reset button held in ( it may do a hard reset back to factory defaults ) also try this holding reset while you turn off.

Reading the troubleshooting from the manual it sounds like its more a cable problem than an addressing problem its looks like 192.168 is all you can configure.

But if its not that post back and ill rack my braincells a bit more

As Harv said, do a hardware reset on the router.

I'd also suggest forcing a static IP on your network card. As the router will be issuing IP's on request and not enforcing them you can do this, you can't do this on networks where DHCP is configured by hardware addressing (only mention this incase people get confused about the way DHCP works).

Ok, I'd suggest using the IP address 192.168.2.50, technically you could use lower but it depends on the router as some reserve low numbers specifically for DHCP assignment. Assign your network card an IP of 192.168.2.50, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.2.1.

Enable the connection and try pinging the routers IP of 192.168.2.1 (as that's what it should default to according to the manual you said).

Can you also post the results of the following commands from the command line (start->run->cmd):

route print
ipconfig /all
