Default Are CPU's Underclocked at factory settings...

Hi all

when i was on work experiance i was talking 2 this guy called aaron. he said that for example a 3ghz processor is actually a 3.4 ghz processor. But they set them to 3.0 to be safe.

He told me that if i overclocked it to 3.2 id only notice a small temp rise from my cpu.

Is this true? and if so how do i go about doing it?

merx

Overclocking a P4... . Intel locked the FSB and Multiplyer on all thier cpu's... i think.

http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/How-T...our-P4-800FSB/
You could use that aslong as your BIOS allows your to modify FSB, if not then youll have to use jumpers

Unless your Mobo has OC software included. Or you could do the smarter option and buy a AMD

There is a peformance boundry for all micro-electronic devices.

They`re stress tested during r`n`d, and given a tollerance bellow it`s maximum settings, somewhere where the device is going to work practically and for the longest expected time.

Any, or most devices, can get a 10-20% preformance increase with a little fiddling (called overclocking and the like) - but with this u`ll get a 10-20% loss in life expectancy and the same increase in problem possibilities.

Hence u`r warranty goes out the window.

Just to clear it up, they`re not "underclocked", they`re at the manufaturers established working parameters. Sure u can overclock, as long as u make/take precauctions.

oo so basically.if your want your pc to sprint and be as fast as it can, remember it will get tired a lot quicker, if you let jog at its own pace, it can go on for ages!

Gotta love metaphors....

In theory yes, u get extremes at both ends of the spectrum.

i.e.

Overclocked stuff that`s ended up running for years and years with no hitch.

Then the less publicized, overclocking failiures that get nuked after a week or so - u hardly ever hear about these cases tho, coz it`d make the clocker seem less "1337".
