never have i been so keen to get the newest windows, the beta blew me away,
it's way better than Vista, even if some ppl think it looks almost the same.
I think youd be best sticking to Vista if youve got Ultimate and a licensed copy at that. Win7 is great, but the most recent vista isnt that bad either.
Apparently there is no upgrade version of win7, allegedly to do with the restrictions on browsers etc.
Remember expiration dates: Please plan ahead for the Beta and RC expiration dates. To avoid interruption, you'll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. The Beta expires on August 1, 2009, and bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009.The RC will expire June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010. In both cases, you'll need to rebuild your test PC to replace the OS and reinstall all your programs and data.
Ive spent a fair few hours on vista and that is probably the worst piece of money thieving microsoft have ever done. Some very nice gimmicks on it but its a horrible thing to navigate around.
So has anyone tried windows 7 yet and is it backwards compatible?
using windows 7 now as i post - its pretty good so far - had an issue with beta graphics driivers but that got sorted quick and the new "features" which were supposed to be part of vista are pretty cool.
Its fairly fast - pretty - smooth - as resource hungry as vista - and has a nasty media centre bug that if you use an xbox causes a memory fault on your PC but overall its a pretty decent upgrade to XP and a polished off vista.

I have RC installed and it rocks just has some 'bugs'. I can play Warhammer Online in windows 7 but I had to ditch my old webcam as no 64-bit drivers for it. Also I use it in silent mode and I can't use gadgets at the moment. Installed Windows Live Onecare so no AV needed.
They dont seem to work the bugs out of one before they release another. I didnt like vista at all, it made simple tasks take too long. Think Im going to stick with xp for now as I can think of better things to spend my cash on. No rephrase that I have more important things to spend my cash on.
Are they sticking them in new pc's yet? I suppose if we have to get a new laptop we could always give it a try on that?
I am perfectly happy with XP still, I really don't want to upgrade, just the same as I never wanted to move away from Win95, but I guess the need for updated security and current drivers and the likes will force me at some point.
Just not sure whether pre-ordering would actually be worth it or not just yet. If I have to format, i'd be updating my hard-drive at the same time, so it would work out a little costly for me.
