Gaming & Console NewsIn this news section you will find a variety of news stories from the gaming world, which we have considered worthy enough to post as a news story, which we would like you to share your thoughts and opinions with us about.
During the year of 1996 the Playstation was on its way to becoming the ultimate console of its era but while the Playstation was still very young at that point the year also saw the release of what some will argue as one of the defining moments of gaming history.
Resident Evil burst into our living rooms and with it we were entertained with an action adventure title that puts you in control of a member from the special tactics and rescue squad or S.T.A.R.S for short. With zombies the least of your troubles you traverse the deadly mansion armed with your trusty shotgun blowing away anything that sort of lets out even the slightest groan.
With the release of Resident Evil not only did we witness the birth of one of the great gaming franchises to date but also the birth of the Survival Horror genre. Some may argue Resident Evil started it all, and since then its laid the way for other games in the Survival Horror genre such as the highly acclaimed Silent Hill series.
Despite other games dabbling in the genre that is Survival Horror, none really do come close to taking the crown off the Resident Evil series, simply put it is the daddy.
What also is worth mentioning is that Resident Evil also made watching computer games fun. Many people while not fancying themselves as a Resident Evil fan can quite happily sit and watch someone else play through the game.
Many sequels have followed since the original, across many formats and even a few remakes. While some do not quite live up to the name and in some cases dont deserve the title Resident Evil on its cover art, over all the majority of games have been worthwhile.
With thirty two titles out there branding the name Resident Evil, all be it a few of them are of the same game but for different formats there is a big enough variety of Resident Evil to go around.
The last of the series, Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube is without a doubt one of the best titles in the series and despite it being a good few years waiting for the players it has once again strengthened the brands claim as one of the best franchises around. It is worth mentioning that there will be a version due on the PS2 at the end of October.
While it looks like that Resident Evil 4 will be the last of the series to make its way onto this generation of consoles, with a Resident Evil 5 already announced for the Xbox 360 it is looking like the Survival Horror giant will continue where it left off.
It is not just refined to the console scene though as a remake of the original game released back in 1996 has been announced for the Nintendo DS and with versions tipped for the Sony PSP as well, it seems there is no stopping the series with the games more
It is worth mentioning that while the series is best known for its games there have so far to date been two films released branding the title Resident Evil. Despite having mixed reactions from fans the overall consensus is that although they dont follow the storyline down to a tee they are a half decent set of films, and a third is in the pre production stage at the moment.
Resident Evil is the first entrance into my gaming legends hall of fame.
Cool summary of the series, but I have to disagree with you about the films being half decent, as a BIG Resident Evil fan, I thought the films were utter tosh after, I didn't mind the original at first but after seeing Apocalypse I just hated them both..
Anyway, cool review none the less, i've actually been working on something like this for Metal Gear Solid for a little while now which isn't far off completion.
I really like the resi evil films, got them both on DVD. Youv'e got to forget the games while watching, as films go their quite good. Looking forward to a 3rd one
I disagree here as Resident evil story lines are muddled and the monsters are too the same.
Resident Evil gave birth to Survival Horror
Silent Hill Perfected it - storyline much better than resident evils ever will be
Agree 100% not taking anything away from the Resident Evil series but imo Silent Hill beats it in every catergory. The town is spooky the fog is great and the other world is just surreal, the other characters are just as disturbing as the storylines and the monsters are just twisted.

You've got to be shi tting me.
They are absolutely awful. Raped by the critics and they don't even know the writer totally abandoned any sense of storyline or integrity the game ever had, and basically took one character from the game (a sexy female, well who'd have guessed?), made up a wan k storyline that's nothing to do with any of the games, and plonked them together hoping it'd work?
Usually scriptwriters/directors take a huge steaming dump on videogame plots to make them more watchable, however Anderson took the aforementioned dump for no apparent reason and ended up with a horrific mass of clichιs that would make any true RE fan weep.

As far as computer game to film conversions go they were half decent. I mean just look at the other crap that has been released in that category and with the exception of Tomb Raider, none have been "let's go buy it on DVD" material.
Well no they weren't, they were ****, how can you even class them as video game conversions, as they had nothing to do with the games at all, except for
a) the title, and
b) zombies.
Have you actually played any of the games???
So out of the billion things he could have took from the series, that would have made it different than a bog-standard zombie flick, like the numerous monsters, characters, locations, storyline etc, he just takes zombies, obviously because he was smoking crack when he wrote the script, because I can't think of any other reason why you'd leave out almost the entire game content.
And now because of these abominations people and critics alike are more reinforced in their thinking that video games can't make decent movies, which is wrong. They just need a scriptwriter and director with more than a lone braincell between them to get it right.

Since when does a film have to follow a computer game? Lets take Spiderman, the film doesnt follow the original computer game or the comics, ok it plays on some of the things in them but doesnt follow them.
Tomb Raider doesnt follow any of the games but just because of that it doesnt take away from the film. I've not really played any Resi Evil games (some of the first but the controls were so complex) and maybe thats why I like the films?
If the film was an exact re-write of the games would people even bother going to see it? Because you already know the story. Can you give us any examples of a video game thats been made into a really good film (sorry cant think of any off the top of my head)

Umm..when it's named after it?

That's different because Spiderman isn't just a videogame, it's a huge series of comics and storylines that themselves spawned various videogames. With Spiderman you can take lots of liberties because Spiderman is pretty much what Spiderman is about. Resident Evil isn't just zombies and a name.
Having said that I thought Spiderman 2 was awful.

Does Tomb Raider have much of a plot though? I've only played the first two. It was basically running around shooting things and nothing more, although I may be wrong because it was ages ago that I played them. In Tomb Raider's case it's a good idea for the writer to make a plot of his own if the game's plot was non-existent.

Probably more people than went to see the films, yes, because the games had a decent plot. George Romero actually wrote a script for the film himself but for some reason it wasn't used. His script actually used characters, lots of monsters and some storyline from the game. To be fair it was also pretty **** but it was 100 times better than what actually got made.
Even without having played the RE games you can surely see the plot of the films is absolutely absurd. A super-powered woman having a fist-fight with a 7 foot tall monster who used to be her lover, lol. Bungee-jumping from a helicopter guns blazing, and running down the side of a skyscraper?
Come on now, it's completely ridiculous, which is why it was rated poorly by people who hadn't even played the game.

Not really. Tomb Raider was alright. I'm gonna watch Parasite Eve very soon and see what that's like. It's Japanese so here's hoping.

Silent Hill actually makes you think Resident Evil gives you everything on a plate.
If there is one person on here that can actually tell me the storyline to one of the silent hill's I shall be very sursprised.

and that is a challange
Its a story of being between life and death, its all in Harrys head what is happening. The Silent Hill world is the place between heaven and hell, as Harry progresses through this world it represents his struggle between life and death, the game ends with everything he held dear to him (his little girl) being "killed", this in effect is the end of his struggle and after the ending credits we see him dead in his jeep.
So the plot of the story is one mans struggle to stay alive, Silent Hill (dark and snowy) are the plains within his mind where he plays out this struggle.
Aint played the game myself, but sat for a weekend round a friends house and watched him complete it, thats what I got from the game. Could be wrong though and it was a while ago since I've seen someone play the game (first one I think).

Sloser to the actual storyline than a lot of people think of it when playin it
Yeah you understood the story better than my brother who watched me play it right through. I think the bad ending is designed to make you think it was all in his head, that or some poor mug was put to the task of dragging his carcass back to his jeep while the credits are on . I can still remember the last line in one of the bad endings to me it's one of those awwww moments that shows you just how much Harry loves his daughter, would type it but i might spoil it for someone . Hopefully Silent Hill 5 will go back to the town as with 4 they tried to move away from Silent Hill doesn't make much sense to me.
