Console and Console Gaming DiscussionIf you have something on your mind regarding the many consoles available, hand held devices or any the great games available for them, then you should use this section to chat about them.
I got some cash saved up and feel like buying a new toy. Is the Xbox 360 worth buying at all? I played it at game shop in my local town and it was just like playing PC... but.. um, my PC can run HL2 and other new games on high-gfx, and can play online. Do I really need to buy a console for £300 that does LESS than my PC can do? It doesn't seem to make sense...
Can't see any games that impress me. I liked the sound of GUN but apparently it's abit of a dud...
Am I missing something with the 360? is it worth buying?
Bloody revolution doesn't come out till March 2006
The Reviews and so on, are looking great, The content of the game is very good and well made. But i ant got time to say all my bit lol so i just sum it up . I dont think its worth the cash at the moment, wait till the prices has droped and the real good games are out. The listing for this xmax is totall bull :S.

Really?
So Kameo, Quake 4, Call Of Duty 2, Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham 3 are total Bull? 5 titles from 4 of the biggest names in the buisness.
Note: According to Gamespot review, Call Of Duty 2 on the 360 runs smoother than the pc's they tested it on (the high end pcs) and noticed no slowdowns. Not to mention its High Def..
If you asked me: So, is the 360 worth buying?
I would reply: Is the pope a catholic?
meh, the only good game there is P-Dark - well, im presuming its a good game because the first one was so great. But then again, Rare has gone downhill since Microsoft bought them (I think its Rare developing it?)
This HD crap is so ridiculous. How many people here have HD TV? Do you even have HD TV? I'm certainly not forking out 600 quidto buy a TV that looks slightly better with a few games
So... reasons to buy 360 so far:
- Perfect Dark Zero
to be honest, if u have a **** hot PC i dont see much need in the 360 apart from playing with ur mates etc. if you dont have a **** hot PC u cud always use the money to upgrade instead of putting it on the 360.
but if u are gonna buy one, i'd wait till january imo, more titles out and sales etc
I'm not so sure myself at the moment either. After making the mistake of buying a PSP early i really don't think i want to do it with the 360, i think it looks great, the games coming out look cool, but there seem to be a lot of delays Microsoft truely aren't honest about and no Perfect Dark Zero reviews before launch...why is it all the other launch titles ship early bar Perfect Dark...i just hope it's up to scratch. I think tho i'll probably end up cancelling my pre-order (or maybe keeping the pre-order but passing it onto someone else who wants one). I'm just not sure it's worth that much yet...the games for me are the biggest turn off...39.99-49.99 a game...**** off! There are so many amazing DS games about this year theres really no need for me to buy anything else...I think i will buy one, but not so early on...to be honest i've been changing my mind so much recently about it i'm not entirely sure.
lol I like the part where u say "if you dont have a **** hot pc, use the money to upgrade"
Upgrade? For £280 you can get the premium package of the 360. For £280 you couldent get a newish graphics card and/or processor and mobo. Not to mention that the 360 is faster than anything you can buy right now. Even the Alienwares dont have tri-core processors.
Anyway. Get 1, dont get 1. Push the button, dont push the button.
My parents bought a nice new 1080p TV . Now all I need to do is hope they got a Xbox360 (will probably go to Tesco at 12 AM on 2nd December and buy one just to be sure, I'll sell it on ebay if I have two). And with HD you REALLY see the difference, got a PC hooked to up to this HDTV by DVI and holy shizzle do some of the movies from the internet look good. When I get an HDMI graphics card it will just be superb and the 360 will be the icing on the cake.
With the reports of single thread development being the only type available before Christmas the only advantage over a pc the x360 has atm is its ability to utilise HDTV.
ok the graphics card is bleeding edge technology atm but they release new GC's like melting butter these days so I don't think that will stay the case long.
However I think come this time NEXT year we may be seeing a different story. The devs will have been listening to the R&D departments by then and producing games that utilise more than 60% of the consoles power. I would hazard a guess they are only utilising 20-30% of the overall package atm.
I have come to the conclusion now that it will be the way the console market develops this coming year that gives us a winner between all the consoles that are and will be available.
Definitely going to buy one of the next gen consoles. Def not going to buy one this year
is HL2 on XB360?
On a totally unrelated note; I just ordered F.E.A.R woop.
HL2 is an XBOX title for the original XBOX, it has a slight drop in frame rate compared to the PC version though, still rated almost as good.
You'd probably be able to play it on the 360 but Microsoft's capability to play old XBOX games is a bit ****ed up looking at the fact you can only play like 200 of the most popular titles and the rest just don't work.
If i were you i wouldnt get one, you sound like you dont actually want one, so why get one for the sake of it?? wait till the other 2 are out and then realise that they're both better than the 360. Save and wait, well thats what im doing at least. The 360 is the same as the last with slighly better graphics, not very impressive graphics aswell for a next generation console, although ive never been impressed by anything xbox. I think people who buy 360's are going to regret buying them when the others come out, and the people that say they dont care, will just be the people who dont like being wrong.
simple anwser is, if your asking a question like this then don't buy it, it would be a waste of money cause you'd never be satisfied with it. So really youve anwsered your own question.
The ps3 and x-box 360 are basically more powerfull than any pc on the market atm other than the top-end alien wares for about £3000+
If the 360 was more powerful than a top-end PC, then it'd need comparable cooling, ie. a huge case and several large fans. And it certainly wouldn't retail at less than £300, when certain graphics cards cost more than double that on their own. It doesn't matter how many cores or teraflops they claim their console can do, you only need to turn to simple economics or physics for your answer as to which is more powerful.
I personally don't see the point in buying any next-gen console unless you have a big HDTV, which is why I'm waiting for the PS3, by which time the £2400 HDTV I want should hopefully be less than £2k. Resident Evil 5 on a 50 inch hdtv

Have to disagree with you here on 2 counts. Firstly the X360 is selling at a major loss on Microsoft's part as they are counting on game sales to be where they make their profit. (£50 a game is extortionate).
Secondly PC's are incredibly badly designed for heat dissipation. If they designed them properly you wouldn't need the huge fans and cooling systems. As a matter of point look at the apple mac. They are incredibly small footprints which have superior graphics and faster processors than the PC compatible. And before you flame me for saying that, apple macs are predominantly used in graphic intensive situations rather than there PC counterparts
There was talk that the X360 would cost in excess of $1200 to actually make each unit
Gpu chipsets in the ps3 and x-box's are more power ull then the newest ones out.
CPUs are more powerful than any home pcs' out atm.
Less ram, yes, but it's not really needed as theres no monster resource eating OS running in the background.
Should have a 50 inch hd tv in the house within the next few months, althought probably not before crimbo >.<
I'm getting both the ps3 and 360 anyway. So it's not a debate of which is better with me. Although game lineup wise, the ps3 will most likely be better.
edit: Ah yes good point harv, the consoles are both making a massive loss on each unit sold. He's right there. The chipsets are actually more advanced on the GPUs, thats a fact, regardless of whether you want to argue the CPUs aren't as powerfull. But's let look at it this way. A normal pc has like, a 3 GHz single processor. x-box 360 has 3 3.2 GHz processors in it running in parallel. How can you argue that that isn't more powerful?

I know it's selling on a loss, but to equate it to a £3000 pc is silly.

I'm not sure about this. What's to stop 'them' designing PC's better then? If Microsoft/Sony can make chips that dissipate heat much better, why has this escaped Intel and AMD? I maintain that you simply couldn't cool the equivalent of a £3000 PC in a small box. If you could then you wouldn't need huge fans for the CPU/GPU cores.
