So if we are in such a terrible recession and UK businesses are doing so bad that they are making no profit how come they sell the wii fit board and game for £120+ when you can buy the same at amazon france for £70 with free delivery
So we have a slight problem in that the user guide is in french at the front of the book - we downloaded the manual and printed it out - problem solved.
If people are stupid enough to pay that amount, then somebody will sell it to them. Shops obviously have extra costs in staff and rent etc but there are only a few things you need to buy in a physical retail environment like clothes or jewellery, stuff you need to try on and touch first.
Even then, you can try the stuff on in a shop, go home and order that size/style online if you don't mind waiting a few days to get it.
Buy the Wii thing from France, you did well to think to hunt and find it at that price.
The only thing I find such a shame about this, is that it has taken a massive global financial crisis for people in the UK to actually start penny pinching, if people had never stopped watching the pennies, this country would be a damn sight cheaper for everything than it is, it's only because so many thicko's have been willing to pay stupidly inflated prices, that prices have become stupidly high.
If it was France there'd be public protests if they tried ripping people off. If it was Greece they'd probably burn a city down. In this country, people sit and mumble about it under their breath while contemplating the situation, for 5 years, then still go ahead and buy anyway.
it always amuses me when i can go into game or gamestation and see a new game for 45 quid+ but then blockbusters just a 10 min walk away it will be 10 quid cheaper
if you dont drive you will even save money by taking the tesco bus and getting a game there, and you have had a little trip out =D
do folks really buy from these places??
i guess some do....muppets.

Lol ye its a pity we are not compeled to do that! Be so much fun!
"Several game stores have been burnt down around the country due to its overpricing of the game "Gears of War 2" Which was priced at £45 when it was on sale for £27 at morrisons!"
But all in all, there is really no point buying stuff in game stores anymore as supermarkets are selling games really cheap now!
OR you could rent them with ease at lovefilm which i am doing now as there is really NO point buying most games as your finished with them in a day or two, only major games you need to buy that have a lot of replay value.

i just discoverd lovefilm 2 discs at home at anytime and unlimited rentals for 15 quid a month
What makes this so much worse is that coming from France its still getting here quicker than from the uk too and they wonder why sales are down and wollies are closing.

How can UK stores justify £50 extra for an item?
The standard reply from business (and government) is that each country has its own different market therfore a person from india paying £30 for a Wii is technically paying the same as someone here spending £130. Now, we all know that mass production costs are fairly static given inflation (of course there are some variables) but the idea holds. But, given that it costs x amount to produce a wii and send it to india and sell it at a profit, and given that it costs the same to produce but a little more to send to the UK you get the difference plus taxes.
It's not just the reseller that makes profit but the taxes imposed, and we are told we are getting a good deal. In my opinion we have one of the highest tax burdens on the planet and we are getting ripped off to boot.
It is unbelievable that oil produced in the north sea is cheaper everywhere else it gets sent across the world than it is to pipe it a few miles to shore and sell it at home, likewise vehicles.
So in a word yes, I reckon we are being ripped off and have been since decimalisation, and once we eventually go into the Euro, everything will increase by up to a further 30%. Its simply because they can.
It might not be the stores that keep most of that difference in price.
Part of the problem is that often different parts of the same company sell to retailers at different prices, so in this case Nintendo France might charge French stores a lower price than Nintendo UK charges UK shops.
Another small problem you might have is if it goes wrong under guarantee Nintendo might try to insist that because it was intended for sale in France, then it has to be repaired by their french repair centre instead of their UK 1.
yeah but making £50 savings on one item means I can spend £20 and buy a second one for the price of insurance
Its not just wii stuff that's cheaper tho blu-ray movies go for £8 in US which can be used in any country and LOADS of other stuff too.
I still find it amusing how many people fall for the 20%, 40%, 75% off sales
They wouldn't know a sale if it jumped out in front of them wearing fluorescent colours shouting IM A SALE!!!
Its all just manipulation and if the companies are doing so bad that they cant sell any cheaper then how come Tesco has such a HUGE profit margin?
How can comet "give away" £40 speaker systems with ipods?
How can you get buy 2 get one free offers. Your not going to convince me in any way shape or form that shops are making a loss selling items on bogof's
Its all down to greed still. If they stopped marking stuff up so high they would sell loads more and make greater profit anyway.
And they say consumers have stopped spending in uk shops.... I wonder why
Dude.... You trying to do me out of a job... If it wasn't for the nice people wanting to get things a little cheaper, by using discounts and sales and the likes, people would never click on advertising ever and sites like TF would not exist, TF happens to depend quite a lot on people liking what they see in the advert and buying what they see on the resulting sites.
I used to work in retail, in dixons, and the "promotions" for each sale were interesting in how the prices really didnt change that much but the savings were at least doubled. They company used to make a huge margin, and the giveaways of course arent that cos they get a higher margin so give away the low margin stuff.

Retro-active discounts
Suppliers will sometimes give a retailer a rebate for each unit of a product they've bought over the year if they buy more than a certain number over the whole of the year, this rebate can make it worth selling the last few hundred at a loss (or giving some away free in b2g1f offers).
