If you look round the interweb you can find news of a hack that allows the playback of DVDs
This hack requires a chiped Wii, but it identifies that the Wii is quite capable of playing DVDs without any hardware modification (the chip only unlocks the console).

The general consensus is that this DVD playback block has been done to keep costs low, as supporting DVD playback requires a fee to a number of peeps. However, it does pose the idea of a Wii channel upgrade, you pay your £10 and get DVD playback. I guess we can only wait and see, but on the back of this the new TV-Menu channel has been identified as collecting its data from G-guide (gemstar) So that will make for an interesting if strange new channel? what would be good is if the guide had radio information.

They are making far too much profit to bother paying out extra for DVD playback its been needed since it came out and it obviously can do it but Nintendo are being a bit fat cattish about it.

Why is it needed? It's not what the console was designed for and nearly everyone has a DVD player anyway. I don't think Nintendo is particularly fat cattish, that's more of a Sony thing. The Console is cheap and if you can mod it to play DVD's that's a nice extra.

its not about it needing to play DVD's its that it is obviously desirable or they wouldn't be chipping the systems and making it available if one of the reasons they are chipping is to get that functionality then Nintendo could easily nip it in the bud and release it as a channel and can even charge for the privilege.
