Default Apple iPhone Debuts In UK Stores

Apple's much-hyped iPhone has finally hit shelves in the UK.

Staff cheered as throngs of excited customers made their way into Apple's flagship store in London.

A small number of Apple fans keen to get hold of the handset had started queuing at stores overnight and numbers swelled to around 300 for the launch.

First out of the store with the £269 internet enabled device was 20-year-old north London student Tom Jasinski who said "It was worth the wait".

"I got here 26 hours ago," he told PA. "It is a great piece of hardware. It is a great thing and I love it."

The BBC's Rory Cellan-Jones described the scene in London as "mayhem".

He said before the doors opened at the store, Apple staff were walking up and down the lines of people "whipping them into a frenzy".

The internet enabled handset has also gone on sale at more than 1,300 other stores around the UK with each customer limited to two handsets each.

The first European handsets were sold at the T-Mobile store in Cologne, Germany just after midnight on Friday morning.

T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom said it had sold over 10,000 iPhones in Germany by late afternoon.

"It was love at first sight," one 50-year-old man told Reuters news agency.

The iPhone will go on sale in France on 29 November and Asia in 2008.

Lock-down

Although the wait is over for some fans, there are concerns that consumers are only able to use the phone with the 02 mobile network.

The phones can be unlocked for use on other networks but this voids the warranty and could break the device if software updates from Apple are installed.

As many as 250,000 users in the US have unlocked the device using free and paid-for software to make the phone work on different networks, and to load third-party software not supported by Apple.

Critics have pointed out that the device, while boasting an innovative user interface which makes it simple to use, lacks technology found in rival phones.

The iPhone only works on slower 2G networks, limiting its usefulness as a mobile web browser, but it does also connect to wi-fi hotspots.

In the UK, iPhone owners can connect to the net for free at thousands of The Cloud's hotspots.

Greg Joswiak, head of marketing for the iPhone, denied that the phone had sacrificed function over form by choosing 2G.

"We wanted to make sure that we had a very small device and good battery life. You can't do that today with 3G.

Talk time

"It's just too power hungry, which is why most 3G phones have nowhere near eight hours of talktime."

One of the iPhone's big rivals, the Nokia N95, has four hours of talk time on a 2G network, while Apple's device has up to eight hours, according to technical specifications provided by both firms.

Customers have to pay in advance for the iPhone and cannot get it free on a mobile contract.

The Apple phones costs £269 and the minimum monthly contract with O2 is £35.

Jonathan Arber, an analyst with Ovum, said: "In the long term it will be interesting to see how consumers will react to having to pay for this device.

"Obviously in the UK most consumers are used to getting their devices for free."

Mr Arber also pointed out that the UK mobile market is predominantly made up of pre-pay users.

"That's a huge section of the market that is not going to be purchasing an iPhone. In the contract segment there are a lot of people who are not going to pay £35 a month.

"But for a large group of people the iPhone is certainly an attractive proposition."

According to analysts M:Metrics 10% of 16,000 mobile phone users surveyed in the UK expressed strong interest in buying the iPhone.

Fifty per cent of the survey sample with a strong interest had not paid for their current phone and almost half were on a pre-pay contract.

'Love experience'

Apple has sold 1.4 million iPhones since it went on sale in the US and O2 and T-Mobile are expecting strong sales.

Mr Joswiak said: "People love their experience with the iPhone. They don't love the experience with other phones. That is why our sales are through the roof."

"We assume that the device will find a very good reception on the market," said Rene Bresgen, a spokesman for Deutsche Telekom, owners of T-Mobile in Germany.

More than a 1,000 O2 shops, Carphone Warehouse stores and Apple shops are expected to sell the device.

Some iPhone owners in the UK have not been content to wait for the official release and have bought the device in the US and unlocked it for use on any network.

One owner, called Daryl, told BBC News he had bought 14 phones in the US for himself and friends and unlocked them.

He said he had unlocked his original phone because he didn't want to be tied to one network.

"I like the current network I am on and I'd like to stay with that network. I don't like be imposed upon as to which network I want to switch to.

"Also the actual O2 network doesn't have very good coverage where I live; Orange has good coverage where I live, that's why I chose them first, and why I want to stay with them."

yeah right im going to pay £269 AND £35 a month for a phone on a network with one of the worst coverages and reputations in the country

My current SE850i came free with a DSlite and a contract that means i pay the monthly ammount and everything else is free...

Yeah apple have another brilliant idea and screw up on marketing. nicely done.

I will wait till the new version on G3, incorporating an ipod into it and all the latest gizmo's on a proper network before buying such a device

even if I got the iPhone free with an 18 month contract I'd probably still not get it as what does it actually offer (apart from interface) that beats other handset features? I'm laughing at the fact the UK market didn't get all hyped up as much as the US market. In most places store employees where outnumbering customers as they had been expecting a huge rush of buyers . No surprise if you look at the features you get for the price you pay. completely over-priced if you ask me. I think the UK users want more than just a fancy GUI and stylish looking handset

I've got the N95 and wish I'd gotten it sooner as it's a great little toy. Mobile internet is awesome as well as using it as a modem for a laptop for full blown 1MB internet access if I'm out and about. Add to the fact I've got free GPS (Amaze) with talking navigation which is an added bonus if you drive. I don't need the fancy interface (though it is impressive) and I definitely don't need iTunes. Also the lack of decent camera, bluetooth headset only and not file transfer etc

also paying £269 (whatever it was) plus £35 a month for an 18 month contract is just a ridiculous price to pay for that phone IMO (is it around £900 in total). You can buy the unlocked on ebay for £389 from someone with a rating of nearly 50,000 and 99.6%

iPhone on eBay

You also need stupid 'Apple only' extras such as an adaptor to use the headphone socket as normal ones you can't actually plug in! You also have to buy a video cable if you want video out (both cables free with N95). I bought an extras pack for my N95 £20 of fleabay and it's great, I got a screen protector, USB power cable, charging dock that has a spare battery also, in car charger and holder (great for GPS in car). Switching to 2G on the N95 preserves power and takes seconds to do and I never run out as I can charge it in the house/car/laptop anyway. I've got a spare battery anyway and it's not much to have in your pocket if I think I am going to run out

I also bought a 4GB card for £25 and I struggle to fill that so 8GB isn't that much more appealing. What's funny is I got a blackcase for £7 from York market before I was even aware of the 8G model and people think mine is the 8GB model whereas I only paid £32 for the memory card & case

also the 200 mins/200 txts a month you get with O2 contract isn't the greatest. I got 800 mins/200 txts on T-Mobile Flext £30 (£5 discount at the moment) 18 contract but best of all I got the handset free (do the maths ).Flext is awesome as you don't have a specific amount of mins/txt, just an allowance and I never use it but I'd certainly be needing more than 200 mins. That's why O2 have done this in the hope people pay for extra mins/txts . I paid an extra £12.50 a month for internet access but it's great being able to have internet access on my laptop anywhere. The iPhone allows free wifi but only in very selective places. The N95 also allows WLAN and you can set it to either ask which connection to use or connect automatically.

I can be confident in saying they will soon be offering more bells and whistles to shift these handsets with a contract soon. There is talk of the 3G version coming next year. So what happens to those with 2G handsets with another 8 months or so on their contract? They probably won't be able to shift them as who'll want 2G when you can get 3G

this is my personal list of the iPhone Pro's n Cons

Pro's
Looks pretty and everyone wants to touch it
Big Screen
Interface
8Gb memory (though I've got 4GB in N95)
Battery life

Cons
Apple trying to control you ('bricking' handsets of those who'd unlocked it for example)
iTunes
Overpriced to buy initially
18 months contract with poor mins/txt allowance
No 3G connectivity - I like my 1MB speeds on internet
No video mode for the digital camera - I like my videos when my mates do silly things when drunk or I see something I'd like to record
No zoom or flash for the digital camera, no flash for the digital camera - again I like the quality pics I get
Bluetooth only works with headsets rather than allowing file transfer - eh? so you can't transfer files between PC or mates?
There is no removable memory - 8GB is great but again I can take out my 4GB card for easier access to files
The headphone jack has been recessed into the device meaning your regular headphones are unlikely to fit
No GPS - great thing to have if you go to new places now and then
No voice recording - oh well I guess personal notes you'd have to write
No support for custom ringtones - I love my custom ring tones and it even says the name of the caller on the N95
Expensive accessories - as always with Apple products
3rd party apps - probably won't ever offer more than Symbian apps do (thanks to Apple)

for me the Cons seriously outweigh the Pro's and I've probably missed some stuff

Just my view of the iPhone and N95 though I'm not the polar opposite I just see a big difference between the 2 in most areas. So I just have different requirements and a good experience of the N95 and how convenient it makes things for me
