History is something I have been interested in all my life, I have particular fovourite periods, mostly classical, (romano-greco, egyptian) and medieval 10th -17th century but any type of history interests me, i have many text books on the subject and read them often for pleasure rather than study, and will always watch a documentary on any history.
Does anyone hear read or like to study academic type subjects for the sake of it or are you all strictly fun and escapism?

What makes you like/dislike a subject and why?
I really enjoy reading into anything technology based, i'll spend ages trawling through web pages learning about fascinating advances, big and small - guess 'cos it's a glimpse into what our future lives will be like.
History to me is depressing =-P, amazing how much things on the outside change - people will always be people, suppose that's why you may like it, learning from the past and whatnot?
I used to have a thing for Greek mythology when I was younger but tbh now I just don't have the time. I used to find most history subjects boring, and the only thing that slightly interested me was the fashion in Victorian times. Other than that I really didn't see the point learning about the past when it's already happened and theres nowt you can do about it

Xena!
I'm amazed at how the tiniest of random events can cause great changes in the course of events.
But I also prefer current or even future (sci-fi) fiction. Some biographies are cool too.

I do all the time but that's because I'm weird (by modern standards) and value knowledge.
Not sure why I like certain subjects, most of the ones I do like have some relevance to my life, however tenuous.
I have always had a mental block with animals though, I just couldn't care less about wildlife it bores me completely senseless. Unless it's evolution orientated.

Because it will happen again and again and again until the end of time. I just read a book on military tactics and it's interesting how basically all modern wars have nearly exact similarities with different wars Napoleon had (apart from the actual weapons). And that's just 1 guy.

Interesting thread this and teflon is basically correct in the military context except Napolean (and us) didn't give a monkeys about the innocent casualties of war. Every effort is now made by the USofA, Europe, and many other countries to avoid this now Those who do not are just savages in my view. Back to history. a clever chap once told me; "You can't know where you're going unless you know where you've been" Fine we may think until we consider Henry Ford's quote, "history is bunk" ! Why did Henry Ford dismiss history as bunk ? - it depends who writes it and for what reason !
I love good old British history, Iv red the odd book but in all honesty I need some real motivation to get my head round things at times so I tend to read mostly Stephen King books for fun.
I would really like to take GSCE history though, but something has always stopped me, like illness or family commitments.
I love History, I'm not interested in our own history tbh i.e. Oliver Cromwell and events such as though, although I do love WWI/II history and our battles with Napoleon (I love the Sharpe series)
I also love doing maths for fun, I can't get enough of sudoku and I love the brain training on the DS
