The Big DebateIf you feel the need to get your teeth stuck right into a heavy debate on a subject you feel really passionate about, then this is the place to do so. Post about religion, politics, laws and all things juicy like that here.
yep, its pretty much what Ive been saying all along.
theres many forms of "nutter" though, psychopath is just one, and for most things its a combination of genes and environment. eg, the reason we are seeing an increase in things like ADHD is simply because our environment is becoming more bureaucratic and rigidly structured which makes it less likely someone with ADHD will get along ok, not because of biological reasons.
our genes define what we are, a 1% change and we could be a gorilla - thats supposedly all the difference between humans and gorillas, yet between individual humans theres probably as much difference. our genes dictate exactly how we will respond to our environment,,, of course there is always random fluctuations in the pshyco field or whatever,,, and monsters from the ID ?
our environment of course has a significant effect too, but many people cope surprisingly well with a bad environment, some people cope badly, but then also some cope badly with a good environment. although good environment doesn't always equate to a rich family.
Wow, that's pretty interesting. It makes some sense when you consider that a dalmation or doberman is more high strung than a labrador or beagle (refering to minor genetic variations, not comparing humans to dogs). This would balance the nature vs nurture arguments - yes a difficult childhood can contribute to ghastly behavior, but bad genetics may provide the basis for these troubles. I'll be interested to see the follow-up.
Time to answer this question as sensiblly as I can.
I find the whole business of genetics just a little bit scary. Once a gene is found, what do we want to do with it - develop, treat or destroy it. In time we will probably be able to transfer it to other life forms. For example, a caring loving gene transplanted to a doberman !
Looking at it more seriously, we are likely to be in a position to engineer any human characteristics we wish. Another example, genetic breeding could create overwhelmingly powerful military forces. Another side of this is identification of dangerous genes during pregnancy - terminate or not in the knowledge that you could be bringing a mass murderer into the world. That's a decision I for one could not make even today but the Hitler regime were well into this subject in the 1930s. On the positive side, genetic engineering could create a super world for all if power, politics and money are kept out of it Mmmmmm
