The Big DebateIf you feel the need to get your teeth stuck right into a heavy debate on a subject you feel really passionate about, then this is the place to do so. Post about religion, politics, laws and all things juicy like that here.
Sorry Det, but I think most of the questions asked in that short clip were more universal - e.g. How many sides does a triangle have? Name a country that starts with U, What is the currency used in the United Kingdom? What religion are Buddhist monks? Who won the Vietnam war?
These things are known worldwide and you would expect most people to at least have a clue
Edit, it's made more believable by the time I spent in America, talking to people who thought various things like Scotland was the capital city of England, and that Scotland was in Australia. Something crazy like 50% of Americans don't know that the earth revolves around the sun once every year.
It is, for a whole multitude of reasons, not limited to but including Catherine Cookson, Ridley Scott, The Great North Run, being the home of the most famous marine engineering education center in the world, it's David Miliband's seat and home, etc, etc, etc.
Manchester pisses all over your place tbh
It's clearly not famous as the indivduals you mention are famous, not the place. I'm not from the area and I've never heard it, you honestly think anyone outside the area would know where it is?
Anyway as for the video it's not the obvious stupidity that's scary (although Ashantes right its general knowledge everyone should know how many edges a triangle has lol) it's their lack of knowledge of the outside world and what the problems are of the outside world i.e. "the religion of Israel is Islam" ><
To sum it all up alot of Americans think the same way as the guy who said "blast a big creator out of the middle east" and tbh I found it sickening and scary.
"Saudi Arabia" as the next target, apart from that being painfully stupid and ignorant of what Saudi Arabia is all about did any of them think lets not invade anywhere??? ><

But you missed the point anyway.
Was the point that in comparison to most places, theres bugger all of interest to anyone there?
We'll i'd say that goes a fair way towards settling my theory.
Outside of Britain, besides Football fans and maybe athletics fans, there aint many people that could pinpoint Manchester on a map, in fact i'd say there's probably very few people in Britain who could accurately pinpoint it.
Of course Manchester "pisses" all over South Shields, that is exactly the point, South Shields is a small seaside town in the North East of England, with virtually nothing going on there at all, except it being close to Newcastle and Sunderland. But without going to Google or Wiki, I doubt anyone could have told me much about it at all, unless the'y been there, lived there, lived in the region or were some kind of georgraphy genius. I wasn't looking for people to actually know about South Shields or where it is, it was the actual responses people gave to it being mentioned that I was interested in.
One of the big points being, why the fek would an American give a shit about anything outside of America unless they had interest in travel, geography, world history or something like that, there is enough to do and enough places to travel right there to keep most people happy for their whole lives, you could fit the UK inside America several times over and still have room for a lifetimes travel. I'm sure if you went to pretty much any other country in the world, the results would be similar... And before anyone says, but... or reverses it, Osborne has already answered it, with the "not from the area and I've never heard it, you honestly think anyone outside the area would know where it is?"
I guess I must actually be the real thick one, because looking at that video, I couldn't answer all the questions that were posed, or mores the point, i'd actually say no, i'm not thick, i'm just honest and willing to admit that i'm not some professor with a 300 IQ that knows absolutely every detail of every single subject there is to know.
Everyone's always so damn willing to pick holes and faults with everything and everyone else, yet nobody ever looks at themselves..... I mean just think about South Shields for moment, Harv and Taggy did exactly what I expected, took the piss because it was me, Ashante was more interested in proving her point than anything else, but did actually admit not knowing any of it, to a degree, Osborne was more interested in bigging up Manchester and belittling South Shields than actually knowing anything about South Shields, Pura did exactly what i'd have expected and gave his normal response. The only person that gave what i'd consider a properly forward, honest, non-judgemental conversational non-self indulgent answer was Moonbeam, who in honesty, I didn't think would reply to it in the first place.Yet in the same sentence, I used the infamous name Jade Goody, the most famous university in the world in Oxford, Newcastle which has been pretty much the single most talked about sporting place in the world since the Keegan walked oout, on both sports news and mainstream news channels and then finally, I mentioned Edinburgh, which is the capital of Scotland and one of only two places in the UK that are likely to be readily known throughout the world, the other being London. I even added the deliberate "don't press the button" style (without Googling it) bit to see if anyone would actually go and research it to try and out smart me on it, but either nobody could be bothered to, or it simply wasn't interesting enough to post about, meaning very quickly it would be gone from your brain again and forgotten...
I wasn't subtle Ashante, I was deliberately as blunt as possible, because I know full well virtually everyone on TF reads between lines, but very seldomly actually reads properly the lines being presented themselves.
The only person that gave what i'd consider a properly forward, honest, non-judgemental conversational non-self indulgent answer was Moonbeam, who in honesty, I didn't think would reply to it in the first place.
See I can suprise you even though I virtually admitted I was thick I had to reply I'm just nosey anyway
Ooo i have a "normal" response, glad not to disappoint.
Your point would appear to be trying to show that we all dont know much about places not far from ourselves, but theres countless places in the uk that none of us know anything about, mainly because were not all walking wikipedias.
On the other hand, while i understand its sensible to not know every square inch of the UK, its pretty lame to not know basics of current affairs, a little international politics, especially when the right to vote "allegedly" allows the people to democratically choose/affect things such as international wars. Even though modern democracy is a sham, people are still voted into power by the people, who decide if they like or dislike that stuff the government does, particularly in reference to America, notorious for people who dont have the first clue about their own foreign policy.
people are still voted into power by the people, who decide if they like or dislike that stuff the government does,
I have doubts on that and have had for years now, for me to believe 100% I'd have to count the votes for myself I just don't trust any of them imo they make things up as they go along
Ok I read back all the posts, and I'm still dumbfounded. Either you're reading too much into this or I'm thick as mince I didn't even realise I was trying to prove a point, lol. Maybe that there's a difference between knowing stuff about a little city, than knowing about world affairs or general knowledge?

Which one was I then?

Help me out here, I just don't get it!! So what that you mentioned these things?
One of the big points being, why the fek would an American give a shit about anything outside of America unless they had interest in travel, geography, world history or something like that, there is enough to do and enough places to travel right there to keep most people happy for their whole lives
I don't think that's an excuse for some of the things on that video. Like knowing what KFC stands for and not being able to make the association between that, and what state it comes from. Or knowing that states are NOT countries. Or knowing that Bhuddist monks are BHUDDIST, i mean the answers are right there in front of them lol.
Well I knew all the answers, and where South Shields is. I can also name every American state capital and point them out on a map along with pretty much every country in the world.
Do I win a thing?
I do have a point though, maybe Americans tend to know squat about anything because they have all they need right where they are, and people like me have a deep underlying psychological dissatisfaction with Britain and look to the rest of the world for inspiration.
