Does anyone hear read or like to study academic type subjects for the sake of it or are you all strictly fun and escapism?

What makes you like/dislike a subject and why?
I really enjoy reading into anything technology based, i'll spend ages trawling through web pages learning about fascinating advances, big and small - guess 'cos it's a glimpse into what our future lives will be like.

History to me is depressing =-P, amazing how much things on the outside change - people will always be people, suppose that's why you may like it, learning from the past and whatnot?
