Oh well, how about you contact Tesco/ASDA/wuteva_el_cheaposhop and pretend to be a reporter for some dvd/tv/wotnot magazine/website and ask them to give you some el cheapo DVD-players for testing.
Although you can't test them for long and find out if they are long-lasting but you can test if DivX/XviD works properly.
