Been learning D A E chords, which I can just about remember, but switching between them at any sort of speed seems kind of impossible lol

A lot of it is muscle memory and will improve lots quickly.
Rather than holding a chord and strumming randomly, try taking your fingers off and on the same chord. Its a lot easier than changing shape, but itll help loads with being able to perform that chord in a split second if you practice the lifting off and on it.
It depends where you want to go and what you want to learn really, if its more lead or rhythm or whatever. Personally i learnt some chords, then started picking out of them, then i got bored and stopped playing after about a year
