Son of Rambow
This film is peculiar. Peculiar and good.
If you like Wes Anderson films you could well enjoy this. (The Royal Tenenbaums, A Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket)
Written and Directed by Garth Jennings, Director of the Hitchiker's Guide movie, Son of Rambow is a period piece (1980ish) following a young chap whose life is boring because his family are Plymouth Brethren (a sort of Ahmish deal where they aren't allowed modern technology.)
The young lad meets up with a fellow first year who is some kind of maverick genius miscreant and wants to make a film to enter into the BBC young filmmaker awards.
The pair of them have adventures trying to film this 'Son of Rambow' short film and become good friends. Eventually they fall out over creative differences when a charismatic French exchange student turns up and wants to be the hero of their film.
It is extraordinarily whimsical and there are sudden and outrageous slapstick moments.
It also broke the record for the most amount any distributor has paid for an independant film at this year's Sundance Movie Festival.
Bizarre, subtle and heart-warming, this is a really high quality piece of visual art. If you want to see an action packed piece of trash like Transformers then leave this alone, but if you are in the mood for a Juno/Little Miss Sunshine/Anything by Wes Anderson type deal, then I highly recommend Son of Rambow.
